I’ve been watching you for over a year now and started bass fishing while living in DFW. Your videos have definitely helped me to catch my first bass and become an avid bass fisherman so thank you. I am wanting to start getting into tournaments, could you maybe do a video about tournament fishing one day?

Great video Tyler! Any more it seems like a mid to low 7-speed is mid range. A 6-speed is great for cranking and I go down to a 5.4 for 10XD.

I simplify it by thinking any bait I move with the reel I want a slower speed. Any bait I use the rod to move (pitching hopping dragging) I want a higher gear.

Also remember long casts reduce the diameter of the reel reducing the effective gear ratio at the start of your retrieve. That’s why you need reduce your retrieve speed or action the closer your bait gets to you.

Your attention to detail on your videos is like no one else. The labeled timed stamps, chapters, links, etc. The boys at Tactical Bassin better watch out!!

Great video. I have two 8.1:1 reels and then the rest are 6.8-7.5:1. Use the the 8.1s for short pitches / flips and target frog casting. Helps with speed like you said getting the lure back in and back out. But for longer casts and anything where I’m using reel to move lure I go with a 6.8 or 7.1-7.5. Going slow is tough for me so I like those ratios.

Thank you I'm old school fishing kinda like what you were saying about your dad I fish a lot when I was younger growing up in south Florida but life took over working all the time but now that I'm older I have more time to do what I enjoy with all the new technology today it can be overwhelming but I'm relearning how to fish you do a great job of helping me with that thanks 👍

Since you asked: Heavy power is the correct term. Actions are slow, moderate, fast and extra fast. Thanks Tyler!

Action - how the rod bends (fast, more at rhe tip vs moderate, more "through" action)

Power - cast weight/stiffness.

Tyler, I enjoy your videos as an older angler. This is a Great video explanation! I would add that Roland Martin gave a great example as well when he discussed speed ratio fishing from a boat when trolling is different than the bank because trolling down the shore negates some of the high speed ration because you are moving towards the bait when casting forward…I still struggle to slow either way ;)

I prefer a higher gear ratio so that as I lose line, my inches per turn doesn't go down too much. Plus it's easier to slow down on a faster reel than it is to speed up on a slower reel.

I somewhat regret getting an 8:5 Curado DC recently. Been using it for top water stuff. I like it for frogs and buzzbaits but not so sure for others like whopper ploppers. You really have to slow it down for those. Not sure what I think about it yet, I’ll have to use it more once the top water bite picks up. I use a 7:1 or 7:2 for most of my underwater lures. If I could only have one, I’d definitely go with something around 7:5 from my experience so far.

I heard Hannah! Awesome question about leveraging the rod's power! Love the teamwork. The sweet American ninja footwork to rescue those tire snags.

Thanks for making this video! Maybe I should try a lower gear ratio, and I might have better luck! I'm still pretty new to bass fishing

High speed reels are also great for casting up river in fast current. You have to be able to catch up to the bait or you get no action and cant set the hook. I know most fishermen in the US are sitting in a bassboat on a lake but for those of us who like fishing moving water high speed is necessary.

I love your videos Tyler but I have a problem a lot of times I will have a fish and I’ll go to set the hook and my drag is as right as can be when I set it the line will rip out a little making it tough to drive the hook in what is my problem? Also sometimes when I’m fighting a fish my drag will be down tight and when there is pressure from a fish on my reel won’t pick up line cuz my drag is trying to come out at the same time that I’m trying to turn the handle
