Electrical Panels: BEWARE of Old Style Panels! MUST WATCH if you have an older Home

Electrical Panels: •Bulldog (Whose equipment is so unique and proprietary that finding replacement parts is difficult, and if they are found are expensive) Bulldog panels use a unique, proprietary type of circuit breaker called a "Pushmatic." Bulldog panels with Pushmatic breakers indicate an older system that is no longer manufactured, making replacement parts difficult or expensive to find. There appear to be two major problems with Pushmatic breakers: (1) they are thermal breakers with no magnetic trip, and (2) they are grease-fed breakers, meaning that if they're not used and serviced regularly (they rarely are), they become stiff and difficult to operate or reset. It is both the age and the proprietary nature of the Pushmatic breakers that beg for a licensed electrician to shut down electricity to the property, remove the circuit breakers, and check the contact points for rust, corrosion, and proper contact with the buss bar.

How much does it cost to have the electrical panel replaced?

Mine is fine. Breakers are pricey is my only hang up. The pushmatic hate, I believe, is a sales ploy to “upgrade” aka easy $$$$

Located in the Pittsburgh, PA area, we have pushmatics in our house that we bought new in 1974. We have had ZERO problems with resetting, r failures or corrosion. The panel is in our dry basement. I have added breakers with ZERO problems. There is no evidence whatsoever of corrosion. Our panel and breakers look NOTHING like those in the photo.

What amp is this panel? And would you replace it with the same amps? Can you go from this to a 200amp?

WT! happened to that panel? It looks like it's been rained on, FOR YEARS. The sheen that's normally on baklite is a flat black. This panel did not come from any typical situation. I have a 45 year old Pushmatic panel in my home and the black baklite still glistens. No problem with the panel either.

That panel looks quite weathered too was it outdoors? My house had the load center replaced in 1983 with the GTE Pushmatic 150amp setup it's been very reliable. However you are right the breakers tend to go bad more often than GE type magnetic breakers. Proper maintenance is key in identifying issues I happen to be electrically qualified so finding the trouble breaker and replacing is easy but may not be for most homeowners. The heavier load breakers have been replaced at least once ever 5 years. What's interesting with the ITE too is the main disconnect is GE style breakers not Pushmatic.

The panel was in a really wet location which caused corrosion. But changing the panel for something that comes from "CHINA" you got to be kidding me. I will maintain the USA made item till the day I die. Nice presentation Sir. Peace too!!!

I am going to move into a house with these type breakers. I have never seen them before. I encountered them because I was mowing the lawn with an electric mower, and the breaker tripped. I had to press on the breaker a few times to get it to reset. Do you recommend that I get the panel replaced?
