The Nordic nation, which shares a border with Russia, applied to join the military alliance in the wake of Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine last year.

Russia immediately responded to the announcement, with an official telling state-owned news agency RIA that the country would bolster forces along its 1,300km (810 mile) border with Finland.

Finland joining is great news from a security standpoint for the Baltic states. That's long been one of the difficult areas for NATO due to their geographical isolation from the rest of the alliance.

Nice. NATO just got upgraded with 280, 000 ready for combat soldiers, 64 new F-35 fighter jets, and a hell of a lot of other weaponry.

Finland has the largest artillery in Europe. Can mobilize 280, 000 trained soldiers quickly, has an air force of 64 modern fighters, has upgraded its navy. The Finnish people are committed to defend their freedom.

Finland has actually pretty well equipped army. True active mililtary is small. But Finland has biggest artillery in Westen Europe and larger reserve of soldiers than France and UK together. And Finnish army is really geared towards the war we seen in Ukraine. Tactics and gear are all geared towards way Russia fights.

As a Finnish person, this comment that Finland joinin NATO would bring just a long border and just that seems weird. Yes Finns think that's the right thing to do and what we also bring is 24, 000 active reserve and yes that is only active. But what is not mentioned here is that Finnish conscription reserves are trained for a task and they are regularly maintained, bringing possible wartime reserve up to 280, 000 troops. And if everything fall to shitter, there is still the thoroughly trained Reserve personnel worthy of approx. 900, 000 soldiers.
Also Finland has strongest artrillery in Europe... so nothgin is really going to just march across that long border.

And Finland just bought 64 F35 fighters to modernise it's airforce, and make a mental note that this was BEFORE applying to NATO.
And Finland already has rather modern F-18 fighters with JASSM capability.

What I feel is that, what Finland brings to NATO is long, but already very defended and strictly guarded border. And historically, a border Russia does not need to worry, as long they stay on their own side of the border.

Dannet is a muppet… Finland has one of the very best equipped armed forces in the world, the most professional and willing military personnel… and an enormous, well trained and motivated reserve…
The UK’s army and air force no doubt are envious of the equipment and political backing that their Finnish counterparts have…

This Lord is saying the opposite to many other commentators who say that Finland has significant armed forces.

I was a NATO soldier 1974 - 1985. Always training and preparing to defend. Without NATO WW3 would have happened already

25, 000 soldiers? What, we have 285, 000 active reservist, and 900, 000 people that are trained and can be called up.

Funny thing - one of the main reason of the russian invasion on Ukraine, as Putin said, was to prevent from growing NATO.
The results are : Finland joins NATO (Sweden probably later), Russia have now some additional 1300km border to watch, as NATO can build there another military bases and bring troops, and Ukraine still holds.

This is total failure of Putin diplomatic and geopolitical strategy.

I feel that Finland doesn't really need NATO
Indeed, NATO needs Finland to defend the Baltics
Infact, Finland after all, has one of the strongest ground forces on the continent.

The good lord doesn´t seem to have a whole lot of knowledge regarding our capabilities when it comes to artillery etc...

"What does it bring to the alliance? In physical and military equipment terms, not a whole lot" ... Finland has as many Leopard 2 tanks as Britain Challenger 2s, well trained and rapidly mobilized army of 280, 000 soldiers (bigger than Britain and Germany), multiple times bigger artillery force than Britain, 64 F-18s, and soon 64 F-35s, among others. Yeah, not a whole lot... :)
