What is a Web Proxy?
A web proxy is an intermediary server that sits between a user's device and the internet. When you use a web proxy, all the traffic between your device and the websites you visit is routed through the proxy server. The proxy acts on your behalf to request, receive, and forward information from the web.

How Does a Web Proxy Work?
Here's a simple analogy: think of a proxy as a middleman or a "go-between." Imagine you want to buy something from a store, but instead of going there yourself, you ask someone else (the proxy) to go there and buy it for you. The store only interacts with the person who comes in (the proxy), not with you directly.

When you use a web proxy:

You send a request to the proxy server (e.g., you type a website URL).
The proxy server forwards that request to the website's server.
The website processes the request and sends the data back to the proxy.
The proxy then sends that data back to you.
Why Use a Web Proxy?
Privacy and Anonymity: Proxies can hide your IP address, which makes your internet activity harder to trace back to you. For example, if you're browsing a website through a proxy, that website sees the proxy's IP address instead of yours.

Access Control: Organizations often use proxies to restrict or filter internet access. For example, a company might use a proxy to block access to certain websites during work hours.

Bypassing Geographical Restrictions: Some websites or content are restricted based on location. By using a proxy server in a different location, you can access content as if you were in that location.

Examples of Web Proxies
Free Online Proxies: Many websites offer free proxy services where you can enter a URL, and they fetch the content for you. For example, websites like HideMyAss or KProxy allow you to browse the internet anonymously by masking your IP address.

Corporate Proxies: In an office environment, a proxy server might be used to monitor and control employee internet usage. For example, all traffic might pass through a corporate proxy that blocks social media sites or tracks usage patterns for security reasons.

Residential Proxies: These proxies use IP addresses provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to their customers. They are often used for tasks like web scraping, ad verification, or managing multiple social media accounts without being flagged for suspicious activity.

VPNs (Virtual Private Networks): While VPNs are slightly different from proxies, they also act as intermediaries. A VPN routes all your internet traffic through a server in another location, providing similar benefits like anonymity and access to restricted content.

Example Scenario
Let's say you're in a country where access to a particular website (like a news site) is restricted. By using a proxy server located in a different country, you can access the website as if you were browsing from the proxy server's location.
