Luke was a little bit like Qui Gon to be honest

The death of Qui gon jin was like a double victory for Palpatine. It severed what ever little connection Dooku had to the light side and pushed him more towards the path of becoming a sith. Anakin needed a strong father figure, who would offer him guidance, support and Qui Gon would have been a better mentor than Obi Wan who was too young and inexperienced. Had Qui gon survived, things in the Star wars universe might have panned out differently.

If you have ever read "The Jedi Path" (an "in universe" book for students of the force) you'll see that it belonged to both Qui-Gon and Luke. Luke would have been able to read Qui-Gon 's notes in the margins and even seeing his padawan braid that he set between the pages when he gained the rank of Knight. He definitely knew about him.

Edit: Page 106 of the Jedi Path speaks on the Knighting ceremony. In the vault edition of the book in that page is a padawan braid with a note in the margin that reads, "The Council has conferred upon me the rank of Knight. I can think of no better place to leave my braid than between these pages. Q-G"

Honestly Qui Gon was just one of the most respectful and purest Jedi out there.
