You missed one thing. Edward Jenner didnt randomly decide to do this.

He was a doctor. He was researching about variolation and inoculation, 2 techniques that were used in asia and were imported by Lady Mary in 1721 to UK.

He noticed that cowmaids had a waaay higher survival rate of smallpox. He then, after interviewing them found out that the smallpox survivers(most of whom were cowmaids) had gotten cowpox earlier.

Combined with the beliefs of inoculation, he thought that cowpox would help with smallpox

Ok, here's the thing.

Vaccines (as far as i remember) contain a close relative or a mutated version of the virus you want to combat.

The first vaccine was to combat pox, cows had pox too, but it was so much weaker that humans that worked around cows obtained immunity and didn't get human pox which is stronger.

So he get's the virus from cows and injects on people.

Similarly, you chinese had a method of taking the saliva, blood or other liquids from a infected person, dry it in the sun and apply with a tube on the nostril of patients, and miraculously it worked because the virus was so weakened by the extreme sunlight and other elements.

Today we do genetic engeneering to replicate certain viruses.
