My biggest takeaway from this video is that all the fish in Wyoming are big and super easy to catch😉 excellent video!

Hooksets are not free. They are a hard earned skill. There are so many types and ways and that's just for trout! Dry fly hook sets, streamer strip sets, indicator nymphing from a drift boat, trout spey (kinda don't do anything but kinda do...). I was catching rainbows on dries at a mountain pond yesterday. Took me a miss or two to dial in the timing. Such a cool series!

Is it better to follow big fish down stream to stay close, or stay stationary and bring them to you when they are ready?

The trout hookset is to get tension to the fly and get the fish on the tip of the rod as quickly as possible without pulling the fly away from them.

Thanks Spencer. I finally caught my first two trout (both brownies 10-12”) last week after 2 years of trying. Now I’m hooked. I had 7 other misses with one getting off my line dancing on the water. I really think I was too excited and yanked the fly right out of their mouths as I usually had to untangled everything from the elm tree behind me or the honeysuckle vines to the other side. Good info to hear. And 👍to Diet Coke along with Coke Zero.

I noticed your rod is no longer in the video after you have the fish in the net. Where are you setting your rod after you have the fish in the net? Is it ok to set the rod in the water?

I just need to get a better line that doesn't have a metric ton of memory, I could probably actually find line tension somewhere

Hopefully this covers keeping the fish from stealing my damn hopper when I'm about 5' from getting it in the net.

So do fly reels not have a drag system then? I’ve heard sometimes you have to manually palm the reel?

Don't give them the reel unless they earn it! If you reel in slack line, you give up control.

With respect your point on not holding the rod high……. I think what you are trying to do is hold the rod in a position that will engage the thicker, stronger part of the rod rather than the thinner, weaker tip. Is that correct?
