Obsessive, intrusive thoughts, or Pure O OCD unwanted thoughts do have compulsions that reinforce the thoughts and keep the OCD cycle going. But, they are often very subtle compulsions that are hard to identify because they are mental compulsions. In other words, they are thinking rituals that you perform after the unwanted thoughts. In this video, I describe what those mental compulsions are and give examples like analyzing, praying and saying positive affirmations.

I suffer from pure o and have worked with a therapist for 5 years, using ERP. The only thing I would like to add is that the mental compulsion does not always give you peace. It took me a long time to realize that just because the compulsion is not lowering the anxiety does not mean its a NOT compulsion. I would become more anxious as I analyzed or try to figure out the answer. As a result, I thought I was doing my ERP wrong. When I realized that the compulsion of analyzing was to try to gain certainty, therefor lowering the anxiety (which never happened). So, in short, you can spot a compulsion if the INTENT is to lower your anxiety (no guarantee it will).

The best way to recognise Obsessive Thought is Anxiety + Urgency to Fix it = OCD. This formula will work definitely in every situation.

Im starting to understand how to control my thoughts and treat them as just thoughts, but i still have a weird "feeling" like theres no words and no images, no voices, just a feeling that im gonna "loose it" and do things i dont actually want to do, REALLY dont. thanks for you videos, they have been helping me a ton

Great video Paige! Ever since my anxiety and obsseive thoughts started I've struggled with insomnia. My thoughts tell me I'm not going to sleep well and eventually get sick all day. I find myself compulsively shopping and researching sleeping aids and techniques to sleep. Would love to go back to sleeping naturally. My thoughts change theme very often through out the day. Your I.A.M technique really helps in those tough moments. Thank you!

Man why did I see this. I’ve been told since I was 7 yo that I have a severe form of anxiety and I tried to use medication and therapy to help and nothing worked. I’ve always had obsessions but I never thought I qualified for OCD because I’ve never had compulsions, until today. Thank you for clearing things up for me because I will now bring it to my doctor and get the help I need

hey paige. thank you for being here every week for people like me who lost all hopes to recover. wish i found you earlier in my recovery. now i have more answers than the questions my anxious brain keeps asking me haha. i developed obsessive worrying during the corona lockdown. didnt even understand it untill last month. and luckily found you. thank you for being a great mentor. i am still scared but now i have a lot more power to stand up to my thoughts. quit my medications completely, two weeks ago, which i thought was never possible. i dont think i would ever need them again. i still have these thoughts always. but i have stopped giving power to them now. i know they are there but i dont play with them. actively doing ERP, Meditation, Mindfulness, keeping notes. my anxiety levels have dropped to all time low since it began. you are a beautiful soul, thank you for helping people like me who had lost all hope. In the last 6 months, I've been through these habits trying to reinforce or assure myself that the fears and thoughts that the inappropriate thoughts which tormented me were not true or were not going to happen while wondered how on earth i could tell someone.
We are not alone.
I sought help after a month or so and now understand how to stand stronger without fighting them anymore.
Feeling comfortable in the public is taking time to stop protecting myself from tigers by being on edge.
Out of 10 with 1 being totally uncomfortable, I am an improving 3 right now and go out on my own. 3 to 4 months after i left hospital.
It takes time to heal if you have been tortured by awful thoughts, fears and feelings that there is something evil and wrong with you like I have but with therapy help, self care, daily journalling, prayer and trust if you are a believer....
The goals we set each week seem more achievable.

So impressed by your outstanding way of describing truly incredible and ingenious approaches. I wish I could avail of your services in helping treat my youngest brother who is 22, had a brilliant record till the completion of Pre-medical school in 2016 (topped through out) after which he gave up studies, lost interest in everything and has been struggling with his thoughts. I'm a doctor myself working in Dubai

Ive done all the above I don't understand how to just accept the thoughts I can have the thought and the mental compulsions but still keep doing what I'm doing but when I get home just have a complete
