The fashion world refers to this mall as the world's biggest washing machine, as almost all outlets there are laundering oligarch money.

The Russian doesn't need these brands anyway. I'm a foreigner currently in Saint Peterspurg. The local does not care cause those high end brands are too expensive and not value for the money as said.

I love the few blocks tin moscow that were designed by an Italian architect in the early 20th century.

Reminds me of large shopping mall in Cracow Poland that I visited in April 2020 in the midst of toughest lockdown. Only grockery shops and pharmacies were opened and all the restaurants could only do takeout with delivery. Very odd feeling - cozy and dystopian at the same time.

GYM ( State universal store) was built in the late 19th century. When I was first there in 2002, it was all local Russian businesses- now it’s all very high end. Strange to see it empty- usually packed! Thanks for taking us through.

A fantastic, unique and immersive learning I would never have known this breathtakingly beautiful and opulent masterpiece of architecture existed. And that church in the square was like something out of a fairy tale just so beautiful. Thank you so much Russell and best wishes from the UK 🇬🇧 xx

GUM is a historical symbol of Moscow, and one of the oldest shopping malls in Moscow and actually in the world. A "grand old lady" of the international department stores - just like Harrods' in London or Gallerie Lafayette in Paris. But GUM is far more beautiful and impressive, architecture-wise, than Harrods' or Lafayette. It's also mucg bigger than those two, and right on the Red square.
When GUM was built in the late 19th century, Moscow wasn't even the capital. St.Petersburg was the capital back then - but Petersburg hasn't got any department store of this size and significance. That's because Moscow was actually the shopping and merchants' capital back then, with GUM, Petrovsky Passage (a beautiful and ornate atrium-style store, similar to GUM, and still standing today) and richly decorated turn of the century Yeliseevslky store (with early 20th century interior, mirrors and chandeliers still intact) on Tverskaya street which is much bigger and more impressive than it's "sister" on Nevsky prospect in Petersburg

This is pretty nice architecture you have there.. thank you for providing wholesome content and I absolutely identify with your life since your struggles and my struggles maybe a world apart but seem to be quite similar.

I was in Gum in 1992. Only one store open which sold Russian stacking dolls. Ceiling leaked and poorly lit. Sorry this happening and for no good reason.

Wow. A ton of high end malls like this one, have all closed in the US. Malls in general are dying. I hate it. I love malls. But I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. Malls were everything back then. Before internet shopping. ☹️

It looks kind of like the Royal Promenade on Royal Caribbean cruise ships I love my large shopping malls but I don’t think I will be traveling to that large shopping mall in the future, thanks for the video Russell

Extravagant Mall, these sort of places are OUT of fashion in medium size cities of US/Kanada. Many big malls are 1/2 empty to nearly empty or closed down. Cities with very high population densities are still busy tho (Kalifornia etc...).
