Multiple states are considering a jump in speed limits. In North Carolina, some interstates could soon go from a 70 mph limit to 75 mph. Some safety advocates are warning that raising the limit could cause an increase in fatal crashes. NBC News’ Jesse Kirsch reports.

Germany proves that the problem and cause isn’t the speed, but instead is lane discipline and awareness. Speed is just exacerbates the consequences of those mistakes. I say all the time that I trust the driver of the speeding sports car over the cruiser in the small Crossover because I know for sure which one is watching the road like a hawk.

there is no reason that a freeway should have a speed limit of less than 75 mph

The bottom line is speed limits need to make sense. An artificially low-speed limit can be just as dangerous as a higher speed limit because it creates two drivers on the same road going vastly different speeds, increasing the number of passes and lane changes.

75-85 here in Oklahoma and the crashes have slowed exponentially. People don’t realize going under the speed limit is just as dangerous as going over.

driving faster uses more gasoline. the oil industry is no doubt behind this push.

Sheriff nailed it. It's the distracted driving that causes accidents! All these biased opinionated reports are based on pure garbage and not a single one asks for psychologists' advice on how low speed limits increase risk of collision. You need to have your brain stimulated to stay awake and focused on driving and prevent the distracted driving. We hear about it in employment but when it comes to the traffic safety everyone is using the same old arguments. The truth is that the only safe speed is 0 MPH. If you really want to improve safety on the road, first, adjust speed limits to actual road quality so the driver stays focused on driving and is not wondering around in his/her mind, second force the car makers to bring back simple intuitive driver interface (ex. climate controls with simple nobs so the driver doesn't have to go into the touch screen every time they want to change fan or temperature settings), third simplify the instrument cluster and remove those computer messages distracting driver with useless messages that are now in place of clear speedometers that we used to have. Twenty years ago you could easily tell the exact speedometer reading with a short glance in less that half a second, now you need to take your eyes off the road to read the speedometer because the instrument cluster is overcrowded with fancy and useless displays. Fourth, force cops (especially off duty) and government to follow the speed limits. Otherwise, it's pure hypocrisy and abuse.

I'm a cab driver. I essentially drive without a speed limit, because the Staties won't pull me over. I top off around 75-80. I've done 125 to make a customer's flight, but I didn't feel great about it. 75-80 is about where people fall anyway. The institutions want the limits low to hit people with tickets to supplement the state income. If they actually care about safety, move that money into paying for road infrastructure repair, not the State Coffers. ...They won't.

To have higher speed limits, the cars must be safe and functional to do so. There needs to be more strict car inspections nationwide like Germany so cars can safely go at high speeds.

Police just want revenue that's why it's still 70mph when cars can go 180mph.

80 feels like good max speed maybe 90 on i5

People tend to drive at the speed they feel safe regardless of what the speed limit is.

Why are we keep doing things that literally go against established researches on road safety?

This is a great idea, I mean… the people who are going to drive way over the speed limit are going to do it anyways, no matter what it is.

Lower the speed limits, don't increase them!

The issue will obviously be that to increase the limit to 75, everyone will be doing 80 or 85, which is really fast. I live in Texas and here the speed limits on most of our highways are 75 and some are even 80. It seems that many other states are wanting to follow in suit.

70 mph is good already on the Interstates
Most state are already 70 I travel from California to Wisconsin back and forth all the time

What's so hard for North Dakota to bump their speed limits a little higher to 80mph? They already have 75mph speed limits statewide on two Interstates, and most importantly, they're very straight and fairly empty.

Fantastic! Now when people crash, it’ll be even less survivable! Good going people!
