An AWACS aircraft, a.k.a an Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft, is a specialized type of aircraft designed for surveillance, command, control, and communication purposes. The radar system on board an AWACS aircraft can detect and track both enemy and friendly aircraft at long ranges, allowing operators on board to monitor the airspace and provide early warning of potential threats. In addition to surveillance, AWACS aircraft also serve as command and control centers in the sky. They are equipped with sophisticated communication systems that enable them to relay information between different military units, such as fighter aircraft, ground-based air defense systems, and command centers. AWACS aircraft are typically large and have a distinctive rotating radar dome mounted on top of the fuselage. This dome contains the radar antenna, which rotates to provide a 360-degree view of the surrounding airspace.

AWACS is the particular name for the AEW system on that C-135 system and some 767 systems. It's not a generic term.
