PAF currently have 9 Erieye fleet with 6 regular and 3 ER version. Also PAF is also interested in a follow on order of 3 more Erieye ER Saab 2000.

Since PAF decided to retire its Chinese ZDK-03 KE AWACS aircrafts, therefore, PAF decided to acquire more Saab-2000 Erieye AWACS aircraft particularly in the light of experience PAF gained during it's Operation Swift Retort, February 27, 2019.

For the maritime theatre AEWACS will be a crucial asset in PAF's southern air command, against both the IAF south western air command as well as Indian Navy air arm's carrier based fighters (unlike PAF's two other theatre air commands, North and Central), specially when the Indian Navy have selected Rafale M. In such a scenario, dispersing the 9-12 AEWACS assets of the No. 3 squadron "Angels" in different theatres of war, might put pressure on the aircrafts as well as on the single squadron as a whole. Previously PAF had No. 4 squadron Karakurram Eagles equipped with ZDK 03 AEWCS, although being an inferior platform, the southern air command had something to deploy that could assist both the PAF and PN. But Now with its retirement, SAC is without any AEWACS. Is there any plan to fill up the No.4 squadron again, with either Saab 2000 Erieye ER or something equally advanced and capable as this?
In future Joint Navy/Air Force squadron will be badly needed with dedicated fighters that will have longer endurance and heavier weapons payload, which are suitable for operating in Maritime domain and properly support the Navy's air and surface assets at longer range. In such a scenario the role of AEWACS will again be crucial, be that operated by PAF or PN air arm.
