IL Gov Shuts Down Allocation of Taxpayer Money for Baseball Stadium

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker made headlines this week when he called into question the wisdom of allocating taxpayer dollars to the building of a new stadium for the Chicago White Sox. Pritzker said the White Sox were a private company and that they were not entitled to taxpayer dollars, which he argued could be far better allocated towards public resources for residents.

Pritzker was praised by many online for pushing back against what they called corporate greed. In 2023, numerous cities and states were under fire for allocating taxpayer dollars to their sports teams. Last December, the city of Baltimore gave its NFL team, the Ravens, more than $400 million for stadium renovations. Critics were quick to point out that nearly 1 in 5 Baltimore residents live in poverty, and slammed the city government for misallocating those funds which could’ve been used to help citizens.

Not sure how many times this has been proven, but never has taxpayer money spent on a private sport stadium ever come close to recouping the money they spent. Professional sports make enough money that them expecting tax money to support their business is asinine.

We subsidize stadiums, the teams make millions, they still charge us for tickets, we subsidizes oil companies, they make billions, they still charge us for gas.
Glad to see someone taking a stand. It's about time. 🇺🇲

Great info - good for him, and I totally agree. I'm not sure how much Texas has thrown towards their teams - and I totally oppose it!

I agree with this. Tax money should be spent on affordable housing that won't be privately owned, so ppl can live in places they aren't being price gouged on rent in. ALAP.

Green Bay built a studium, but the CITY OWNS THE STADIUM. The team is also owned
by the citizens.
This is why Green Bay Packers fans are so loyal and satisfied.
Private corporations should NOT be funded by tax dollars. Their immense profits should find private stakeholders. The fiction that the NFL ia a non-profit corporation is ridiculous.
Most of the disinformation we get about corporate pollution and safety standards cones out of allegedly non--profit organizations like THE PETROLEUM INSTITUTE, THE AMERICAN TOBACCO INSTITUTE, etc.
Non-profit law should be revised to endure that their purposes are actually in the public good, executive pay for non-profits should also be capped.

I love how he leveraged moral images in the perfect comparison. It dosent even matter if we are building a birthing center or not. I just love how masterful that was

You can ask citizens from every city that funded stadiums if they have or will ever stop paying for them

Is "birthing center" another name for hospital?

I applaud this man! If they can't afford to build their own stadiums, then they shouldn't have them.

There is two sides to this, and both are logical.
Public services should be considered, but those services dont generate revenue. They consume it.
And at the same time those sports stadiums bring in a lot of business for the city. That means more tax revenue for public services.

There also isn't anything saying a team can't move to a more favorable area and strip all that business and tax revenue from a city.

We would have the money for both of we wasn't sending money overseas...just saying...

Birthing centers? Do you mean hospitals? Looking at him while talking about Birthing centers is disgusting. Obviously, he isn't interested in sports either.
