Costa Concordia could collapse before salvage complete

The Costa Concordia was thought to have been resting on a flat reef. But 3D images created by sonar and laser technologies show the boat is in fact perched on two pieces of rock below its bow and stern, raising concerns it may collapse under its own weight before salvage operations can be completed. The two rocks have begun to crack and crumble under the weight of the boat, and the hull appears to have deformed. Source: Discovery News, Il Tirreno

There's many different perspectives, but that's the way I like to think about it.

io, ho navigato su di una nave così, penso che in casi del genere, bisogna solo avere la fortuna di potersi salvare

Jahre Viking, biggest ship ever built. 458m
Mc-Kinney Møller, biggest container ship ever built. 399m
Vale Brasil, biggest bulk carrier ever built. 362m
Allure of the seas, biggest cruise ship ever built. 360m
USS Enterprise, biggest warship ever built. 342m

Costa Concordia is merely 290m long, 168 m shorter than Jahre Viking, and 72m shorter than Allure of the seas.

I can't understand why they don't just weld steel plate over the damaged area [which is fully exposed] and then pump out the water?

Hardly, you say? Ok, then... let's hear about other objects that are a LOT larger than Costa Concordia (I used the word "LOT" because you said "HARDLY" - which means that, BY FAR, there are larger objects OR we can EASILY find larger objects). "Not EVEN close" - you said it so let's hear about those HUGE objects, please. If you just mention 2 floating objects that make Costa Concordia a SMALL object, I'll be more than happy. Please, let's hear it (or read it). Thanks in advance :)

You mean ship, the word *boat refers to a small vessel, while a ship refers to a large vessel. A 952 foot vessel most definitely qualifies as a 'ship' I don't understand why people are continuously making this stupid mistake.

The Concordia is hardly the largest object to ever float. Not even close.
