Costa Concordia cruise ship accident in Italy

At least six people are dead after the Costa Concordia hit rock off the Tuscan coast around 9:30pm on Saturday. The Concordia quickly started to take on water and began to list badly. It is believed the captain decided to head for the harbor of Giglio. Once near the shore and in shallow water, the wash from the Concordia may have been deflected back toward the hull, causing it to roll. It has settled at a 90° angle on its starboard side. After the collision the ship was heading back out to sea, past the island, but Schettino turned it round to bring it close to shore. The action saved lives. I'm not saying Schettino is a hero - far from it - but I do think that we should not overlook the fact that he actually did one thing that was good.

0:24 "And finally settled at a 90 degree angle"?
It looks more like 50-60 degree angle to me using the water as a horisontal measuring point.

The Concordia lost main engine power almost immediately after the collision. All of the tracks show that as the ship drifted out to sea, the captain began a hard-a-starboard turn, to bring the ship back. However, it had slowed so much that it stopped moving during the turn. The captain then used the electric bow thruster to first to continue the 180 turn, and then later keep the ship abreast of the current, gradually sliding the ship into the shore until the stern ran aground.

It's not that it looked like Titanic, but rather that their were similarities between the two disasters. Similarities include: (i)trying to navigate in known dangerous waters, (ii) the damage to the hull that flooded too many watertight compartments; (iv) Unpreparedness for the evacuation and (iv)long delay after collision, and inaction of the crew to orgainise effective evacuation. (v) long sinking time where dramas unfold.

Everyone is complaining about him saying 90 degrees.

Do people understand that others can accidentally say things wrong and not relize it?

0:00 that’s not actually the costa Concordias true model. They used a model of the ambience and renamed it costa Concordia

Lol, yeah. Kind of funny that so few people realize even after seeing the ship on television for so many days in a row.

Love how a Regal class cruise ship currently operated by P&O Australia is being passed on as the Concordia :P

Actually, the ship started to drift out to the ocean (I think at this point they had no real control over the ship) until the wind pushed it back to shore. It was just luck/ physics. This animation doesn't show the true path the ship took, it was only uploaded a few days after the accident so they wouldn't have known.

Oh, everything I'd read about it said that it was just because of the wind. Well there you go.
After a quick google it looks like they're still debating if it was the wind or the captain's steering.
I think if he did steer it he did a good job of catching the wind, because the tracking path looks like it's being pushed sideways by the wind, but I'm definitely not an expert :) It'll be interesting to see what the conclusion is. I kind of hope he did at least one thing right.

@thweepz After hitting the rocks, the ship lost power, so it was out of control. It slowed down, came to a stop, and then it was the wind that pushed it around and in the direction of the island and caused it to list to the other side.

Buena animacion, es increible como se llena de agua y se hunde poco a poco el barco.

so since the ship is being dismantled. Are they dismantling get to the rebuild it or something

"the ship eventually settled at a 90 degree angle on its starboard side" Wouldn't 90 degrees be sitting upright? I think the narrator meant more like 45 degrees.

@thweepz.When a ship turns it heels out of the turn. As he turned to port to get closer to shore, the ship would have heeled to Stbd.and any water in the ship would have flowed to the stbd (free surface flow), causing a list to that side A big enough list will upset the balance between 3 factors, the centre of bouyancy, centre of gravity and the metacentric height. When the M.H. goes outside the Cof B the ship will role over.
