Tennis Forehand Wrist Lag And Snap

Key Takeaways:

Lag- occurs at bottom of racket drop and the racket trails behind the playing hand before it advances to the ball.

Snap- releasing racket head to generate power.

Lag is a byproduct of relaxation and good swing rhythm. Do not snap on the forehand, because you should not be flicking your wrist. If you see modern tennis players, their wrist position is the same position the wrist establishes in the lag position. Soften your hand and let the lag occur, and stroke through the shot. When you watch most professional tennis players hit, they hit the same through the hitting zone, but after contact, different styles form.

Have the left hand in control in ready position so your right hand has the same tension you play your forehand. Do this to soften your hand when you play your forehand, it will allow the lag to naturally occur. Then rotate and drive through your shot, this will allow you to hit with more power on your forehand.

I think you are spot on when you emphasize the lag as being the product of a relaxed forehand swing and when you caution about trying to add a snap to this swing, John. I was a bit dismayed, however, when you used the phrase "set the wrist" in describing the forward swing. I'm afraid that some people will construe this as meaning to keep the wrist both firm and immobile during the forward swing. Personally, I think it is a mistake to focus any attention on the wrist as it should be passive throughout the stroke. The wrist is simply the coupling between the hand and the forearm and it is the latter, for example, that rotates in the forehand's finish and not the wrist to any great degree.

Well explained--thank you. Seems like "snap" should be removed from the phrase altogether. Maybe "lag & release."

I really don’t think so. If you look at your own RF example he lags his wrist about 100 degrees hyper-extension and “hinges” as you put it (flexes) until about 60-70 degrees extension at contact. These 30-40 degrees of flexion (snap) are the key to easy power and with internal rotation, topspin.
