Miss Mary Beard, please remember that yes, Rome absorbed enemy cultures, but to do that, there was a enormous military and political dominance that forced people to adapt the roman outrageous these days, with traces of their previous one. Rome not only conquered land by force, it conquered populations cultures too and also by force, to the extent of almost extinguish them. So the whole idea of todays europe being welcome and an open society to foreign mass immigration is just a falacy since, both context rome/modern era are totally different in context, method and sophistication.

Mary likes to gloss over the daily brutality of Roman daily life that made all of its citizens fearful to walk the streets. I don't know when all of the slaves she mentioned were freed and made citizens but just a little time online reveals scholarly articles which refute this claim. Rome's "openness" inspired the Greeks? Please! The Greeks left us philosophy and art. What was the Roman legacy outside of a few bridges and imperial brutality?

Wonderful explanation of the essence of Rome which is asylum. The greeks were racists, the romans (like catholicism which succeeded it) were open.
