@5:45 Some of these Roman funerary inscriptions are genuinely moving. They were human beings, with real lives, with loves, with heartaches, with their children and spouses.... it's amazing.

Wonderful presentation. I think I'm falling for professor Beard, no need to worry though-I'm 71yrs old and as dilapidated as some of the ruins. Not old enough to remember ancient Rome but Professor Beard brings it all to life so that I feel as though I have been

Prof.Mary Beard is far and away, one of the most excellent presenters of the classical world. She makes your hair stand on end thinking anew about the claustrophobia the  filth and the real light and colour of Rome.

She really brings an enthusiasm about Roman History. I love how she talks of the common people and what life there was like. She's cool.

I'm seeing a lot of similarities between the way the ancient Romans lived and how my parents lived growing up in small villages in central and southern Italy. My parents were born in Italy in the 1920s and lived in small, very old cave-like homes that had no electricity, no indoor plumbing or toilets. They lived mostly an outdoor life as the ancient Romans did. Professor Beard shows us many Roman tombstones with inscriptions, but I would guess that your average poor Roman citizen did not have a tombstone or possibly even a burial site. My mother often talks about her father's crypt that was located in the small and crowded village cemetery where her family “rented” his burial space (as most people did) for about 12 years before her family was expected to empty the tomb to make space for future deceased people. This was in 1950. My poor 19 year-old mother was the only courageous person in her family willing to remove her father's bones, dust them off, and carry them home in a large apron. This practice had been going on for hundreds of years, and I imagine this must have been the case for many ancient and poor Roman citizens as well. Only the relatively wealthy people had permanent tombs. I was born, raised, and live in Canada. I treasure all the personal stories my parents have passed down to me and my sisters. My mother is still alive and well and continues to reminisce about a bygone era that now only lives in her memory, but will continue in mine for as long as I live.

For those of Professor Beard's viewers who think she is dumbing down the content, go and listen to lectures on the topic, read journal articles. something like this series are supposed to appeal to a wide section of the population who are interested. I love documentaries, I have watched everything I can find. For education and for entertainment. I have a Masters in Ancient History and teach History. I'm up for everyone who wants to tell me people's stories. And also for those in the inter web world who have lampooned Mary for how she looks - grow up.

Thank you, Mary, for this truly enlightening aspect of Roman life that deserves our attention today. fascinating. It's important to bear in mind that the Romans' way of life was before Christian notions of "morality, " "personal hygiene" and "vulgarity" as we know them today set in, so historians have probably tended to avoid these aspects up until now.

I love Mary Beard. This is my second time watching this series. I will probably watch it a third and fourth time. She is just wonderful, and I've seen no one do a better job of taking people through ancient Rome.

She is thoughtful, knowledgable, inquisitive, and rocks the grey hair with confidence and dignity, doesn't try and color it like a coward. I hope I find a person like that to spend my life with
