‘Little Hallelujah’ is a placeholder, really, for whatever you imagine – for what’s true in your own story. Everyone experiences desperation differently. Everyone seeks help differently. The ‘Little Hallelujah’ being prayed for in the song can be viewed as your hope that a friend, or God, or parent will come to your rescue – or it’s referring to that external thing being a drug, alcohol, or whatever else. “Give me a little hallelujah, just a little hallelujah, ” I sing at the end of the song. The song is saying - either someone is going to take my hand and help me through this, or I’m going to reach for something I shouldn’t to try to do it myself. It’s about yearning for God or escape or both.
