how do I check logs if HA crashes periodically?

yaml is somewhat greek to me. In config file I entered [recorder: auto_purge] brackets not included and got green check mark file ok but when try to restart HA get error message that the file is bad. What am I am missing thanks

I have a question. I’m just beginning HA but can logging be used for HomeKit events? As you might know, there is no log file or access to one for HomeKit events and makes it impossible to troubleshoot. So if I added one of the HomeKit plugins for HA, and merely use it to watch the events, can HA see them and then log them? Your thoughts?
