Hey golfers, I’m PGA Teaching Professional Todd Kolb with USGolfTV; and today On the Lesson Tee I’m giving you the secret on how to hit the high soft chip shot. Now the most common thing that a lot of golfers do when they try to hit the ball high and soft—or even when they make just a regular chip shot—is they get the butt end of the club and the club head going different directions.
When they start their swing, the butt end of the club—the top part of it—goes towards the target, and the club head goes away from the target; and what happens is that literally de-lofts the golf club, unless they do something different in the downswing. And the only way to undo that is to accelerate the club head, and the ball pops off the face and it takes off. So what you want to do, and the secret here, is to get the butt end of the club—the top part of the club—and the club head moving the same direction initially; they both move away from the target on the backswing, and they both move toward the target on the forward swing.
And if you do that, you’re going to maintain loft on the golf swing; but more importantly, you don’t have to accelerate the club head to get it back to the proper position. And what that will do for you is it will allow the ball to come off higher, softer, land just like a putt, and just kind of roll up towards the cup.
