1000 watt generator VS 5000 BTU A/C. Sportsman gen1000i / CHIONE air conditioner

Wanted to show that my Sportsman 1000 watt inverter generator would in fact easily power a 5000 BTU a/c unit. Highest wattage I got this unit to get up to was 409 watts on HIGH COOL after 34 minutes of running. Ambient temperature at time of test was 77 degrees / 40%Humidity.

A/C unit that I bought based off a few good reviews here on YouTube was a CHIONE 5000 BTU. I’ll put an Amazon affiliate link below. These links help support the channel,if you choose to purchase through them. Thanks for watching!

This is just what the little generator is for. Charging battery, running some lights. and a small window AC is a bonus.

In case anyone watching this wants to know. I just got a Frigidaire FFRA051WAE

And it has a soft start feature. When testing it gradually ramps up in watts when compressor kicks on so it never spikes. Around 460 watts max cool highest fan.
Youre still going to want to turn off eco mode when starting since this load is still over 50% of the running watts of the sportsman.
Also, the extension cord matters too. Thickness of guarge isnt so important with this load but length does.
I.E. dont try and run 800 watts off a generator with a 150ft 16 guage cord. As the length gets longer the voltage drops over the distance. There are many tables on the internet showing proper guage and length possible for the loads.

Nice video. Yes, these small CA units are good for a power outage. I bought a GE 5000btu unit and it draws 450W at max cool.

I live in phoenix arizona and my biggest fear is if the grid goes down. We would be toast literally.

Very Nice Review. I have two of these Generators for a couple years now. (one is BNIB). Just keep them in the background for just in case. Camping, Power outage or back yard ETC. Have used the one around the house on small projects. May need to start checking more of the limits on these units .Thanks for the lead on the CHIONE. Was very impressed. Will need to pick one up for camping.

I can't say enough good about Buffalo Tools. I bought a sportsman desert sand 4000 last year from Walmart after 40 hrs it quit generating electricity. My first thought was, what do you expect out of a $300 generator. I called Buffalo tools service dept and the lady gave me directions with pictures to check the brushes and AVR. When both of those items showed no signs of breaking or burning up she got another lady to email me a postpaid shipping label to send it back to them. I received another brand new in the box within a week delivered to my door. I have about 600 hrs on the newer one and it performs like a champ usually starting on the first pull. I use it often powering my 25 ft travel trailer. If and when it conks out I will definitely be buying another Sportsman.

I just wanted to mention that a different 5000 btu ac may not work. I tried this with a different model and the surge when the compressor kicked in would shut generator off about 80% of the time. I also tried to put a cheap soft start cap in and that didn't help much either. I am glad you found a combination to work for you.. thanks for posting.

Getting my gen tomorrow, that last winter was nasty. Great video

The hotter it gets, the more amps it will take to pull the coolant past the expansion valve. I could see it going up to 600 watts in the desert.

Good performance even with a big extension cord. Nice.

The extension cable helps a lot. It buffers the current spike when the compressor kicks on that would otherwise stall the generator.

Thanks for the video, I watch another video earlier where the guy used the same type 5000btu ac but it kept shutting his generator off, wonder what he was doing wrong. The cord may have been his problem too, never thought about that, thanks!!!
