A new interim government was formed under Nobel Laureate Md Yunus in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina resigned and flew to India. With a hope to bring normalcy back, MD Yunus, along with 17 members of the interim govt, took their oaths in Dhaka. However, the safety of minority communities, especially Hindus, in a violence-hit nation remains a concern. On August 09, a large gathering of Hindu demonstrators took to the Dhaka streets against attacks on their properties. Protesters held placards reading ‘Hindu lives matter’, ‘Save Bangladeshi Hindus’ and photographs of vandalised Hindu houses & temples. As per Reuters, Hindus constitute about 8 pc of Muslim-majority Bangladesh’s 170 mn people and have largely supported Hasina’s ALP. Notably, Hindu temples, businesses and institutions have reportedly been targeted in Bangladesh. Earlier, EAM Jaishankar expressed concern over the situation in the neighbouring country while highlighting attacks on minorities.
