How to Create or Extend a Linux Swap Partition using Ubuntu (gparted). This tutorial applies to all Linux distros with a Swap Partition and room to extend or create the Linux Swap by creating open disk space. We'll go through the process using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, but it applies to most Linux Distributions. Follow along and Create / Extend your Swap through gparted and the command line today. The swap partition helps unused memory get swapped out to the disk from physical memory. This allows for more memory resources with quick access times to be available for your system. Swap partitions also help with setting up hibernation on your Linux system. Swap partitions can be great and all they do is take up some disk space on your storage device. Swap partitions in Ubuntu Linux can be a pain to extend and create. That's why we'll learn about how to do it step-by-step today.

Damn dude you’re the first Ubuntu instructional video maker that doesn’t talk about irrelevant nonsense for half an hour making it confusing as hell. Thanks for not doing that. Really appreciate this great guide!

I use Swap partition(not swap file) of 16gb, so is this video is for swap file or swap partition? Bcz I wanted it to be clear before I move forward.

forgive my ignorance but isn't swap only necessary if you have little RAM?

Great video. I use a program for astrophotography processing that requires the use of swap files. The developers say to use swap files with the ext4 format. What is the difference between ext4 and linux-swap and will it affect behavior? Thanks

You can also adjust things like swapiness to make the system use it only when necessary. Keeps disk/ssd writes to minimal. Not that it's really an issue these days

It worked fine but after restarting the computer, when I type swapon in terminal, it does not show me the partition. I open the parted app but there I have to turn swap on again, as it is closed. Swap does not load on boot. Any solutions?

I followed the process but still it did not allow to resize by dragging. it was going back to original size again. It is for Ubuntu 21.10
