How to Solve x^2 + 8x + 12 = 0 by Factoring

In this video we’ll follow a clear set of steps for writing the factors for the equation x^2 + 8x + 12 = 0. We’ll first write the skeleton form of the equation and then find the factors for the last term in the equation, and then test to see which set of factors give us the correct equation.

There are a number of ways to factor equations like x2 + 8x + 12. For example, you could:

To factor the equation we follow these steps:

2. Add the signs.
• If all the terms are positive: (x + ) (x + )=0
• If the center term is negative: (x - ) (x - ) = 0
• If the last or if both terms are negative: (x + ) (x - ) = 0

3. Find the factors for the last term should equal the middle term.
