Wow, screentone. Takes me back to my days of doing ad work at newspapers. We would often run into problems where people had already screened their images and then we had our own screening process in our art department and images would get really oddly pixelated. It was such a fight to get original art work and have clients not screen it.

Honestly if you are planning to have your work printed in newspapers it is better just to grayscale rather than screentone. The newspaper printing process converts grayscale to screentone to achieve the same luminance because the CYMK printing process for newspapers prints at 100% luminance so the only way to change the luminance is to screen the image (ie add white space or add black dots).

OMG thats how they always got their shading so good on those things, and why it looked like the plaid was one single sheet

I... I always thought they hand drew those dots, especially as a kid. Delightfully bamboozled 😂❤

That stuff is so old school. I used it 65 years ago.

I never really thought about it much, but it does look like Skip Beat uses a lot of different varieties of screentone. It's one of my favorite manga, cool to see you using it as an example!

That is OLD SCHOOL! Artists used that before computer graphics existed. They were as common and were used as often as pencils and pens!

Wow I love this! This must be so fun to use, especially with so many patterns available!

I remember being 12 and running around all of northern Germany just trying to find one of these to no avail. But you can make your own with an inkjet printer and transfer. These days with the internet not really an issue anymore.

Immediately knew that's Kyoko from Skip Beat. My fave manga. 😊

The skip beat picture being used as an example!! Perfect example of it being used in the past and present. That series has been running for a while now.

This is absolutely sick! I love how as a digital artist, I have the means to do the same however just with filters and templates! The people who do this traditionally need to be applauded. The precision is dope asf.
