The way Jack Nicholson says anything makes it seem more sinister than it should. That was probably what made viewers at the time really suspect that Jack Torrance was mentally unhinged, though the plot itself only hints at it. I think it's way more clear in the book.

It’s a purgatory/ghost world that keeps repeating itself. It’s a carbon copy of a carbon copy and on and on. That’s why there are so many inconsistencies in this. A stitch in time in their repetitive purgatory.

I do love this movie but it bears no resemblance whatsoever to Stephen King's novel. Might as well have been called something different altogether...

Chandeliers in this movie always stand out like seeing a quantum computer overlooking everything...
A reoccurring visual in Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut"
