When I see Jack and Wendy interact throughout this movie, I get a sad feeling. You can tell she’s cheerful and more into making the marriage work than Jack is. Even when he was sane in the beginning, they don’t have any affectionate moments. Their marriage gives me the sense that they briefly dated when they were younger, but not seriously. Then, Wendy got pregnant with Danny and they had to marry. Now, the high of the relationship has died down and Jack feels like he’s stuck. There’s a distance between the two.

Interesting side note; Jack Nicholson starred in two extremely successful films based on classic books, and in both cases the authors hated the film versions: Stephen King with this one, and Ken Kesey with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Ironically, both are connected by the fact that King specifically cited Cuckoo’s Nest as the reason why casting Nicholson was a mistake, as people who had seen that movie would be able to guess that Nicholson’s character of Jack Torrance would go insane.
