Too Many Choices? God Dammit

Do you feel overwhelmed and disappointed with a purchase when there are just too many options? You may have occurred the overchoice effect. According to the psychologist Barry Schwartz, the reason for this is that you are trying to pick the best option, or even after making the purchase you believe you could have chosen something better. Interestingly though, neither children nor elders experience the overchoice effect. Children tend to go with their favourite, while elders simply pick what is good enough. So next time that overcoice effect hits, go with your gut instinct like a child; or remind yourself that you don’t need to pick the best one- just one that is good enough- like an elder.

I know. You’d think having more to choose from would be a good thing but it really only makes it harder to choose.

I usually choose based on what I already know I like. So I guess I'm a kid still.

Hi Psych2GoThis is incredibly interesting and thank you for this great video. I see this exact thing in my practice as a Family Doctor too - our role is not like it was in the past which was to be paternalistic and to tell the patient what to do, but instead it is to give options and to let the patient make their own decision given all the information. However the majority of people prefer for us to make the decision for them instead and state they feel a little overwhelmed with the responsibility and the choices on offer!
Have subbed as I've always found your videos very insightful and an inspiration for my channel. Keep up the good work!
Kind regards, Dr Varun

An solution that always works: be vegan XD
Is there wool, fur, milk, eggs, honey etc. in there? No? How about any chemicals or substitutes derived from any animal parts? Palm oil? How's the price?

Aaaand you've about two to three options left.
Worls everytime :P

Isn't this also related with the terror people have of failure nowadays? You try so hard to pick the best option, considering all your possibilities and getting anxious because you want to get the best product, not the worst, but it backfires. I see this same thing happen but in education and student grades.
Maybe it's a problem society now has in general, less about many choices and more about not-failing ever attitude...

The over Choice effect. Before you look for a new phone you decide on the highest price you're willing to pay. Then you move on to the make like for instance Sony or Motorola whichever is the favorite then do you really like a large-screen or is your thing more complexity? Take into account every one of your preferences like for instance if you prefer an iPhone then start with the price, check out your options, don't forget to take as much time thinking about it as possible or you could do my way, think about it over several weeks and decide on one of them at the last possible moment. That last advice may not work for some people!

I don't experience the over choice effect but I did when I was a child I think that's because when I was younger I was extremely impatient

To me having options is better to be honest, i just think about what the best option is for about 5 10 minutes and then i decide, It's really that simple
