Unless I am mistaken you missed a critical point about Socrates’ trial, at least this is what I learnt a few years ago:
In that day in a case there would be the jury that would make their decision on the victims predicament and the defendant who would do the same.
In Socrates’ case the first decision was death for him, which you explained very well in this video that no one wanted, so all Socrates had to do was ask for something not too bad: instead he asked to be brought into the pantheon…
This is why he was sentenced to death: between the two sentences the jury had to decide death as Pantheonisation would have been unheard of.
I find this part of the story to be also most illuminating on the person that was Socrates: self righteous to the very end.
