Why Was Socrates Executed - A Brief Summary of The Trial and Death of Socrates | Greek Philosophy

Socrates is widely regarded as the father of Western Philosophy. He left behind teachings such as "The only true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing" and "The unexamined life is not worth living". As to how Socrates was as a person and a citizen, he is described by Plato as "the wisest and justest, and the best man I have ever known". This would make one think that Socrates must have been highly regarded and valued in ancient Athens. But as it turns out, that wasn't really the case. Not only was he not regarded, but the democratic government of Athens considered Socrates to be a threat to its democracy. And this made them put Socrates on trial and sentence him to death by drinking poison. Needless to say, this raises some questions: Why was Socrates accused? What was Socrates accused of? Why was Socrates put on trial and executed? Was the trial of Socrates fair?

Even if he did come to disapprove of the Thirty, we see from passages of texts such as the 7th letter of Plato, and the Memorabilia of Xenophon, that he had had an ongoing rapport with the organisation. He tutored a number of them, and so it seems like he had a political influence that Plato, as one of those followers, might have downplayed in his texts.

0:35 How can nearly everyone who discusses Socrates leave out these points discussed right here in this excellent video. Socrates wasn't indicted for poetic and goofy reasons, he was brought into court for treason. "It was 399 BC. An aging Socrates, probably 71 by the time, was due for trial. His crime? Well, his accusers, namely Meletus, Anytus, and Lycon, had charged him with impiety, speaking against the gods and corrupting the youth of Athens. These charges seem made up, don’t they? Well, that’s because they are. The actual charges were unmentionable since, in an effort to put an end to the hatred and hostility developed within Athens during the war, the government had banned any public mention of specific war crimes."

Socrates would dance with goats. Had he of danced with 20 goats at once, the Spartans would have fought their way to him, carried him on their shoulders to a port city, sat him down and have a few beers with him, then put him on the ship where they waved and cried as the ship sailed off.

Uhhh… kind of failed to mention the main reason why Socrates didn’t leave before his trial. It was because his “daemon” or “divine voice” told him to stay. Surely you’re familiar with it if you have read Plato‘s and Xenophon’s dialogues.

How could you possibly miss out the part where he is asked, “why have you not prepared for your trial?” And then Socrates famously responded, “twice I have attempted to prepare for my defenses but my divine voice interjected“ that’s not the direct quote that’s literally something I remember off the top of my head and you make an in-depth research video and you don’t even mention that! What are you?

I'll say this...Like Socrates I am also ignorant as well as lazy and complacent...so this concise video explains the necessary points that give one an idea of what happened without taking a week or two reading a long over thought book that is still just someone else's opinion and explanations...One would have to study years and may still not know anything factual about Socrates since he Authored nothing...

Just learning this, his decision not to save his life was not wise.

He's probably wondering around as a reincarnated man not knowing his past.

Socrates sounds like a monotheistic prophet of God who’s teachings were corrupted. Honestly, he probably escaped but Plato played it up.
