I have to agree hard with the last bullet. The best leaders are made through the forge of experience. No amount of theory or book discussions on leadership will ever replace carrying that rock.

When it comes to the question of learned or made, I always think of Iwo Jima. Leadership was decimated to the point corporals were company commanders. And they served well as such because it was necessary. Also, there is the formal chain of command and the informal command. This is when Audie Murphy steps up and takes charge of the assault to maintain momentum during a stalled attack.

I don't have leadership skills. But, I believe I have the maturity to both understand and accept that I don't really have that ability.

In my case i learned from the positives and the negatives from the NCO's i experienced and when i became an NCO i took the best of the people i knew in my past and developed into the leader i became. The one thing you can't be is to hard headed to not listen to subordinates opinions prime example in the 80's tons of military equipment changed including in my Communications mos where we were given new equipment without any classes on how to operate except manuals lol. But the many of the sp/4's and below were learning how to use the new equipment in AIT and became a good help during field exercises. I feel that's just one example of how a good leaders does what he has to to complete the common goal of the unit.

I still remember someone told me must wear uniform to gain respect . I told him that respect need to be earn not just wearing uniform . The staff only respect the rank but they will not give thier 100% when i call for help . I am glad that i gain respect and 100% support from my former staff.

Leadership - Spartans. Male and female went through the same training, apart, until age 14. Girls stopped. Boys were exposed to competitive team effors against each other. Initially, two boys would be chosed at random to head opposing teams and they would alternate in choosing. By the end of training, a leader had to articulate why he chose or rejected a fellow student in selection. This meant that the leadership had to be keenly aware of the merits and demerits of every fighter.

Leadership - First German storm troopers in WW1. Only single men without children were allowed in the unit. An officer would describe an objective. The enlisted men would come up with a plan that included weapons, movement, timing and options that might exist. This meant that everyone participated in the preparations, knew the other people in the effort, and had the confidence that things would work out.

Leadership come with correct passage or path, every day going straight forward by putting much effort, doesn't change and come back again, stable constant.

In the corps, for every 10 shitty leaders, there was always 1 good leader that I could learn from. However, I learned a lot from the shitty leadership I had too. Mostly to do what they didn’t do. You learn from their cruel and uncaring nature to become a person that cares and isn’t disrespectful towards anyone. You learn that everyone deserves respect regardless of rank.
