2016 Toyota Prius Review - Still The Hybrid King?

Today I'm going to unbox one of the best all-around cars on sale today - the 2016 Toyota Prius. As with previous generations, this all-new fourth-gen model is a gasoline-hybrid with a five-door lift-back design.

Power comes from a 1.8-liter inline-four and, when combined with the electric motor, produces a total of 121 hp. Zero to 60 mph happens in 10 seconds and top speed is only 112 mph. But that's more than enough for Prius buyers. After all, speed and performance is not what people buy this car for. What they want are three things: safety, technology and, most of all, fuel efficiency. The latter is where the new Prius shines: 54 mpg city/ 50 mpg highway and a combined 52 mpg. But is the new 2016 Toyota Prius still a good overall value? And what about that radical exterior design? I discuss that and lots more in this unboxing review. Check it out!

Loved my 2006 Prius and love my 2016. Design is amazing and unique. So futuristic and a great drive. Love this car, a Prius driver for life!💙

i have a 2009 prius and love it but its getting up there in miles i would like a new prius but i don't like the display being in the middle. I've also thought about switching to a crossover just for more space but I'm at a lost on what to do.

Great car! Yes get rid of the white plastic trim. Our 6th Prius 2016 $20, 599.00 pls tax in CA. I have never understood the ugly comment. I buy a car for the MPG and clean air quality.

We bought a new 2015 instead of the 2016. There were several changes Toyota made that didn't please me. We have 2 Prius cars now but we may switch away the next time. The white accents are a major turn off for me. I've never liked the gauges in the center. Some 2016 models come without a spare tire. Rear seat leg room is important. I would prefer a taller rather than shorter car with a more vertical drivers seat. Toyota eliminated the second glove box, and the single glove box is smaller. No 12V outlet under the dash.

Yes, the P4 is still the king.
Also the bestlooking one.
Own one for over 3, 5 years now, no problems - no wonder, has an unbeatable efficieny which is the result of an ongoing development of the initial hybrid thought over 20 years now. A car that is build around the Hybrid System. Not the other way round like all other hybrids, which are contributions to "modern times", in which everyone seems to think, well hybrids are flashy and sellable, let's build one until e-cars totally will take over! Something I will hopefully not experience in my remaining lifetime, I guess.

The people that have spoken with that own the Gen 4 Prius say they love them, and traded in an older Prius for them.

That blank dash in front of the wheel is a place to prop up your GPS or small tablet. Bluetooth connection to the OBD2 and it will display any and everything you want.

Only problem with this car is that hardly anyone drives it. Come on you guys. Go buy a Prius and while you’re at it go shop at Whole Foods. Drive green and eat green. Namaste.

What's the difference between all six trim lines??

The Chevy volt beat the Prius 0 to 60 x 2 seconds. The Chevy volt out handles the Prius. The Chevy volt is cheaper than the Prius. The Chevy volt can go in the carpool lane in California.

In between segments, maybe decrease the audio gaps

Not gonna lie, it looks ugly. You mentioned that the model you were looking at totalled around $33000. This makes me wonder why, at that point, you wouldn't just go the extra mile and buy a Tesla Model 3 for 35k? It looks much better, it is very futuristic and, judging by the other Tesla's, it will also be safe.

I've been driving one of these for the past 4 months while in the UK for work. It's right hand drive, but basically the same. I normally drive a VW e-Golf at home. The Prius is weird, as a gas 'saver' it does it's job, but they don't take advantage of the EV motor enough . As an EV driver I found the EV mode in the Prius to be absolutely useless. If you mildly press the accelerator it shuts off for what it deems 'excessive acceleration'.... If you are going over 20mph it shuts off for 'excessive speed'.... If you are in 'B' mode it won't engage.... In fact 95% of the time it was unavailable for some random frustrating. It does have 3 drive modes, normal, Eco, and 'power'. Once I discovered power mode I put it in power mode always, otherwise it's sluggish at best and needs to have power mode as a drop in mode if you mash the pedal for safety reasons IMO. ( the E-Golf does this where it automatically goes into full power mode if you mash the pedal). The interior is roomy, but otherwise cheap, lots of hard plastics, shapeless seats and the white painted sections are stolen from a Chevy Volt. The HUD display is a must have because the dials are off center otherwise. the adaptive cruise was decent, and the rear camera was well placed but too exposed and gets wet and dirty, (again another thing the e-Golf does better, where the rear camera is hidden away behind the rear VW badge and only pops out when in reverse.) the rear wiper was in the same place as the left hand drive car, so in right hand versions it's visible in the mirror and often confused with a car in your blind spot, and the area it wipes is useless. The exterior is frankly hideous, the front has too many things going on while the sides have very little and the rear is from a completely different styled car! Not to mention the awkward a pillar crease just randomly diving into the fender with no relation or pick up to anything else, making it look like a mistake. In all it's a weird car for those who only care about saving gas, but not brave enough to buy a full EV, and have little care for style...
