I’m going for music production and need a new Mac. It seems I can go with either one, the laptop or the Mac Studio. I know I need ram and TBs and I know they are expensive. Yeahhh! Johnny McClung for the win! Your videos are so good even the sponsored segments are educative, and thus not skippable. For test 1, is it because your Mac Studio is the 512gb base model ssd? It would be probably closer if you had picked the 1tb or 2tb?

I can't understand why you call those speed "imperceptible".
Test 2: going from 11m37 to 8m27 - That's 27% faster
Test 3: going from 4m41 to 3m16 - That's 30% faster

Thanks for comparing these two. I have the 14" M2 Max and was thinking about getting a Mac Studio to leave at my desk and relegate my laptop to just being a mobile device.

You say at the end that the difference isn't significant, but as an event photographer constantly building previews for 1000's of photos the M2 Max appears to be 400% faster which is WILDLY significant and honestly kind of shocking.

Was debating mac mini, macbook pro or studio for art/animation etc. while i dont work with heavy 4k rendering I’d still want to invest into a machine that would keep working 5 years down the line. Don’t mind waiting for m3 tho as im coming back from windows.
Is studio an overkill then?

Thx for your comparison, I have a question please, I own a M2 Max Studio with 38 cores, 2Tb SSD and 64 ram, and I love it paired to a studio display, but I wonder if I could use without any heat issues or battery damage issue the same config but with an M2 max MacBook Pro, the pro is that I can take it with me even though it would be use as a desktop for 90% of the time, but the downside if that I would need a dongle ( +96€ ) . but I'm worried about letting the MacBook always on 24/7 will the battery will act in a smart manner ? and I know these can heat up more than M1 so I'm hesitant about that too. it seems both M2 max machines behave the same, no throttling apparently compared to M1 machines... can someone help me . thx a lot.

Great video! I have a MacBook Air M1 that I love. using it now. I have an iMac intel 27" but thinking of getting a laptop to connect to a monitor....M2 Max MBP. I don't think I really need the iMac....and it's an intel from 3 years ago.
