i just saw this movie and i gotta say, this movie was the perfect level of “out there”. it was so strange and twisted and a beautiful representation of grief. rebecca hall was outstanding.

I personally looove the way the supernatural was visualised. I love the way they used silhouettes of wooden carvings and how you can see invisible beings in ripples of water. Like an illusion.

I completely teared up at the end during that... conversation. What a beautiful and horrific exploration of grief and depression. Definitely a movie I’d like to watch again.

The Night House may be my favorite horror movie in years. It's refreshing to have a film rely on tension and the unseen for scares rather than torture, gore, and jump scares. Acting was superb and I liked the linear story. While I'd like to have had a bit more detail of the husband's actions, in the end the story felt like it wasn't spoon fed to you which was nice. I'm a bit surprised your rating wasn't higher but I always appreciate your opinion.

I saw it back to back, watched every spoiler review, and even read some articles deep diving about the ending (Screen Rant). I'm catching a lot of new details. I didn't expect this much depth. I found this movie incredibly effective as a horror film, and it shows us how powerful grief can. Rebecca Hall was perfect for this role.

WARNING: minor spoilers:

The part from the nap in her friend's lap all through to people running and jumping off the cliff had me in full on fight mode. I was ready to fuck a ghost up! Those were some seriously well put and executed jump scares.

I just watched this on HBO Max and I really enjoyed it. I agree with you about it being different, I enjoyed the use of negative space in the house, I teared up a little at the end. I loved the scene with the kid's mom. I thought the ending was kind of dark because it didn't really get resolved, the thing was still with her... All good stuff.

Definitely a film that seems like my brand. Hearing “follows it’s own beat” sounds awesome.

If you watch at home turn the volume up so certain scenes make the proper impact. The theater I was in had incredible sound and the sound design alone had me so tense waiting for things to happen, but they often happened when I wasn’t expecting it.

You describing this as offbeat and a "foreign American movie" I totally understand what you mean and you peaked my interest, I might have to go tomorrow night! Thanks for your review with no spoilers as I didn't even know about this movie before clicking on your video!

Absolutely loved this and the hypnotic use of Richard and Linda Thompson's The Calvary Cross. The lyrics work particularly well I think...

I was under the Calvary Cross
The pale-faced lady, she said to me
"I've watched you with my one green eye
And I'll hurt you till you need me

You scuff your heels and you spit on your shoes
You do nothing with reason
One day you catch a train
Never leaves the station

Everything you do
Everything you do
You do for me

Now you can make believe on your tin whistle
Ah, and you can be my broom boy
Scrub me till I shine in the dark
I'll be your light till doomsday

Oh, it's a black cat cross your path
And why don't you follow
My claw's in you and my light's in you
This is your first day of sorrow

Everything you do
Everything you do
You do for me"

Loved your review! I just watched it and I really liked it! Probably one of my favorite horror movies of the year so far tbh

You had me at 'The Empty Man'. Loved that movie. It caught me offguard at several times and it fellt offbeat. So if it has that general 'feeling' I'm definitely in. Looked kinda interesting but it's at the top of the list now, although I'll probably will wait for a VOD or DVD release. (if I have to go to a theatre it will still be only for Dune, Bond or Halloween Kills. Nothing else). But eager to see it now for sure.

It's already one of my favorite horror films in years! So refreshing and unexpected. Unforgettable performance by Rebecca Hall! And it creeped me out so much!

Just left the movies. Man I loved this film. First movie in years that actually hit me in the feels and scares (the jump scares actually caught me by surprise for once in my life). Best yet, it left me with a lot of questions which 99% of films don’t do these days. Loved having a mystery to contemplate. Ending was a little “meh” but besides that I have no complaints

omg emma. the figure that appears in the background behind your car at around 6:15 scared the sh*t out of me. i was genuinely worried for you for a second hahah. looking forward to seeing this tomorrow. it better make me jump. Also if you want another great Rebecca Hall performance (her career best I've seen so far) watch Christine, based on the true, tragic, story of Christine Chubbuck. It was my favorite performance that year, and she was egregiously robbed of a Oscar nom. It's also just a damn great character study.

So I went to see this this morning, and I was the only person in the theater. For this reason, I found it extra spooky, and I totally agree about the jump scares. I nearly jumped out of my skin more than once. I did predict at least some parts of the ending, but I think that’s because there was a subtext that is very personal to me. I ultimately really enjoyed this one and walked away from it feeling weirdly seen. But the parts that didn’t work for you… I can see them.

This finally came to my theatre Emma and I have to say this is my favorite horror film of the year thus far. And you are absolutely right, every time you would expect a scare it wouldn't come at that moment. Which I found brilliant. I have what I call the five-second-rule. There is always a moment in horror films when a certain kind of tension comes, the music or silence or cinematography cues you in, you count to five and something happens. But this was a breath of fresh air. And Rebecca Hall was perfect.

(I don't the scene you referred to, maybe the boat scene at the end?)

I really hope this one gets a release in my country, definitely a fan of Rebecca Hall in off-beat horror films 🙌🏻
