In 1926, famous cowboy artist Charles Russell described himself in the prologue to his book "Trails Plowed Under." It was near the end of his life, and you get a sense he could tell the end was in sight. In this honest reflection, the man who captured the beauty of the Wild West lays out his feelings plain and simple.

Any man who can make a living doing what he likes is lucky, if I can cash in now I win!

My grand dad would maintain ( who was hitting the downtown bars about the same time Russell was) he would carry a gun-shot silver dollar or 50¢ piece in his pocket for a bar room trick he would play. He would wager he could hit a coin thrown in the air, with his 6 gun every time. But somehow when he did it, his bullet holed coin was always found on the OTHER side of a fence near the bar. Once he got good and tanked up he would sell his paintings for next to nothing tho. Ah, the downtown scandals or Great Falls Montana in the mid to early 20's.
