This is the best description of fatherhood that I’ve heard on the big screen.

This is one of the greatest deliveries of the meaning of fatherhood and the role of a husband that I have ever heard. You don't want a medal, or honor or praise. All you want is to keep them safe and do what you can to make them happy; and to see them grow into good adults. Extreme heat; bitter cold; rough winds; snowstorms; thunderstorms; nasty people; tough job; long nights of worry. You do it. Day in, day out. You do your job. You work for them. You pray for them. You take them to school and help them with their homework. You do it for them just like your parents did it for you and for your siblings; and, one night, when you are watching this movie for the umpteenth time, and the lights are out; and the years have gone by, and they are all grown and are out on their own with a reasonable portion of a good life; and Bernardo says these few lines, and you look back, and Bernardo's words at that moment strike to the depths of your soul, maybe the tears will come into your eyes, too. "'They do this because they love you and because they want to...." Bernardo's words are the core meaning of the entire movie.

That is good acting. I have a Dad like that. Irish, I was little and laughed about a war between India and Pakistan on TV on a Sunday. I got the most awful smacks. The lecture here reminds me of him telling me off. Sometimes staring at you, sometimes not.

It would be cool to also have the follow up scene as he lay dying while the villagers took up their farm tools to fight off the bandits and the children came to him in tears, and he told them, "Look at your fathers. Look how they fight for you."

Cannot forget this. Ordinary men and women love their families, work hard pay bills do their stuff. Nothing fancy or extreme or clever just solid love and respect.

0:26 i miss the days when that was socially acceptable, same with punching a man out cold who'd insult your honor in public or punching a woman to show she's hysterical or you love her
back when men were f-g men

Arguably, this film was Charles Bronson's breakout movie, and he was 39 when it was released.
