I truly believe that somewhere out there lies a well preserved Neanderthal or Denisovan mummy, hopefully discovered sometime in my lifetime.

Killed two people with the same arrow, damn that Ötzi was hardcore

Crazy how you can learn so much about history just by one mummy

He killed two people with the same arrow. Carried his homie and fought against 4 people at the same time. That guy was a certified legend💀🔥

R.I.P Otzi the Iceman. I hope he’s doing well in the afterlife. 😞

Otzi won the fight but it cost him his life. He was not killed outright in the conflict but was badly wounded by the arrow to the shoulder and the blow to his head. He actually managed to leave the scene of the battle and put some distance between himself and his defeated foes. Sorely wounded though, he was making his way higher up the mountain to hide and escape further conflict. His wounds though were too great and he died shortly thereafter after trying unsuccessfully to remove the arrow himself. Between the pain, the blood loss, the altitude, and blow to the head, he lost consciousness and fell into the snow. He never woke.

This is why his attackers did not take all his belongings - quite the contrary in fact. The ax (the copper of which was not from his local area you will recall 7:21 ) was in fact a short lived spoil that he gained from one of his defeated attackers less than an hour before his own death. The unfished hew bow was not his own either. Otzi at 5 foot 3 inches tall would not be able to properly use a bow that is 6 feet long. Based on his height, Otzi would have a draw length of about 25 inches. This draw length is well below the draw capacity of a six foot bow and would not allow Otzi to pull the bow back far enough to take advantage of the longer bow's power stroke. Unfinished or not, the big bow was best taken along to avoid any pursuer using it against him as he made his way up the mountain.

Was there any scar tissue around the arrow head found in Otzi's body. Perhaps it had been there for some time, from a previous skirmish. The fact that his body was not looted, especially of his high-status copper axe tells me that he probably fell to his death as he was escaping into the heights from others pursuing him.
It's fascinating to speculate.
My hat goes off to the modern day investigators who have unravelled as much as they have about this unusual individual from the past. Well done.

North you are unreal, I only mentioned this subject to you a few weeks ago and you have in a short time put together more information about Otzi than I new existed. I have seen him in Bolzano Italy a couple of times but now I know all about him. Thank you North excellent work Regards IGGIE

Good job NORTH 02! This is the best I've seen on the topic.
Many people take the assumption that Otzi was alone when he was attacked. It's refreshing that NORTH 02 doesn't assume this.
It's just as, if not more, likely Otzi was in the company of a small number of similarly equipped comrades. For circumstances we will never know Ortiz's squad got into a battle with a squad of enemies. This could have been a single sharp engagement or a running fight over a period of several hours or days that may have started hours or days earlier. I lean towards a running fight.
It's possible Otzi's squad took up a defensive position where he fell for a few minutes or hours. The blow to the head could be a mercy killing. I'm not saying it was- I'm just open about that.
It's possible Otzi's comrades "split up his stuff". This happens all the time in combat. Maybe Otzi had some better stuff than his comrades. So they took the better stuff and left their inferior stuff. Two examples: Maybe the copper axe was actually of lesser quality. Maybe the quiver with the twelve unfinished arrows was or wasn't Otzi's.
The other scenario is the running battle forced Otzi's comrades to abandon Otzi and his stuff with the intention of coming back. But circumstances prevented anyone- friend or enemy from ever returning.

He was tatted, had drip, was strapped, had wealth, eat lavishly, went from territory to territory, lived on the edge: hunting and climbing mountains, geeesh. Someone was hating on him. But he went out like a g. Thats my ancestor.

Otzi is such an amazing human and fossil! This is another brilliant video, North. Thanks for making it!

Always struck me too, that his killers never took the axe - which, at that time period, would have been a hugely valuable item. I can only guess, but I can imagine that there may have been an incredibly powerful taboo against taking items from a dead person (especially one that you had killed!) Don't want their ghost coming back to haunt you - I put that jokingly, but I'm sure the thought of a dead person's spirit, particularly one who was unburied (or burnt, or interred or however the dead were disposed of in the particular culture) would have held a very real and powerful fear for copper age individuals! Anyway, as always, great video - thanks!

I got a matching tattoo of his a few months ago. Not to take away any honor he may have shown to earn it, but to honor our ancestors. My way of having history live on with me

Thanks for the info. I've followed Otzi from the beginning but somehow missed findings of the blood from four other individuals on the artifacts. That completely changes the story line. As to the music, music often gets in the way of a good documentary and I didn't miss it at all here.

We can kind of guess why they didn't take his possessions. Otzi's items were designer made expensive stuffs, not likely anyone could afford. You can't get away with mugged items in a small community, everyone will ask you "Yo where did you get Otzi's copper axe"? "Where is Otzi?" Which also means Otzi and his slayers came from a small village.
