Mark Weitz from the 60s psychedelic band Strawberry Alarm Clock tells the compelling story of their #1 hit Incense and Peppermints. Nobody in the band could get the vocal right after numerous attempts. Finally they had a random friend who was their watching the session sub in and try the song..It was, this 15 year old kid named Greg Munford. He nailed the vocal in one take and he wasn't even in the band. They ended up using his vocal and the song hit #1 in the summer of love 1966. The band also included Ed King form Lynyrd Skynyrd...who wrote Sweet Home Alabama!

I would never have guessed that the singer of Incense and Peppermints was 15, and not warmed up or anything. Cool!

Never would've guessed that voice was from a 15 years old...Incense and Peppermints is a Beautiful piece of psychedelia...And the name Strawberry Alarm Clock has to be one of the Coolest and most eclectic ones in the history of popular music. Thumbs up to the one who came up with it👍😁😁😁

I still have original sheet music and 45 record I purchased and used as a young teenager rock musician back in the sixties. One of the best classic rock songs!

Song written by Ed King, whom you might better know as part of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Three Guitar Army.

Great story, love the interviews
Reminds me of a 17 yr old Don Henley singing back up vocals on Bob Seger's
" Ramblin' Gamblin' Man " His mom came around one day and Seger said she pulled him away because they were smokin' weed !! 😢 😅

Spur of the moment additions, changes, ad libs, etc are why the OLD music can't be beat by modern music. Much of Motown music was written and recorded because of "happy accidents".

This is the quintessential 60’s song that can transport me back to that era in an Austin Powers moment. And I always look forward to that most iconic double high hat symbol hit: TSSS, TSSS!

And as long as we're on the topic:
Alex Chilton of the Box Tops was 16 when "The Letter" came out in 1967.
