Lydia is something special. Throughout the Elder Scrolls series you've been on your own and those that followed you only did temporarily. Then in Skyrim you suddenly have a companion willing to follow you everywhere and respects you, which is something nice. Most people that played Skyrim for the first time probably went through the first parts of the main story first, so it's likely Lydia was the first follower they encountered, the first permanent follower that is. Also Lydia is as basic as it gets. She has little to no personality, her looks don't look too bad and her choice of weaponry is simple as well, but it gives her this certain charme the other housecarls can't really replicate.

All in all, Lydia is a follower. Nothing more, nothing less. She might not be much, but she does what she's intended to do fairly well, and I think that's alright.

They are verbally attacking Lydia because she is usually the first and most used follower in the game. I mean it makes sense to throw shade at her because of that. Ore maybe they just dont like Housecarls.

I wonder... What, if anything, happens if at the bit where Lydia asks 'Where are you' and Inigo says he's 'the blue thing talking' to her, if timed right before Lydia responds, you turn Inigo invisible..? (assuming you have that spell)
