I was taught in mech engineering that there are three ways of designing something: The right way, the wrong way, and the German way. When their stuff works, it works very well, but when it doesn't work anymore, there'll be a crying and a gnarshing of teeth, followed by a sudden ability to speak loudly in foreign tongues.

"honey, the mechanic just called and said we need to fix the leak on our sway bars."

I remember when people complained about Chevrolet's hydroboost brakes being too complicated.

I'm old fashioned enough to think that simplicity is an engineering virtue.

I've worked on these for 13 years and haven't had to replace one so I'd say they're pretty well engineered

Keeps you flat around the corners, makes you feel better than you actually are

I can confirm, as an E60 owner, it may be over engineered but it really makes all the difference, you feel the car stiffen up as you accelerate and the car feels very well planted around corners and heavy braking.

Citroen xantia activa had electronic sway bars coupled with hydraulic suspension in the early 2000's.

There is an old bmw video of an E65/6 in a slalom with and without dynamic drive. Its crazy how much it helps with a 2 ton car.

I know what I'm getting into when I got my BMW... I do most of my own repairs and that saved me quite a bit of money. It may be more expensive to keep it running, but there is a big smile on my face everytime I drive it and that is priceless.

I dont know if its possible, but if i had one and the motor went out I'd just slap a normal sway bar in

The LAND ROVER DISCOVERY series 2 was doing that called ACTIVE CONERING ENHANCEMENT before BMW.

The system is a neat idea. The handling characteristics driving one of these cars are impressive considering the size and weight. I was working for BMW when this design came out and I now own an auto repair shop specializing in Germany’s big three (BMW, Mercedes and Porsche). We work on mostly older Porsche’s. I’ve experienced German over engineering for over 20 years and that is a prime example of German over engineering. These items are great until they aren’t then they are too expensive. You forgot to mention the over abundance of electronic involvement to make it work. All of that being said, I have seen very few issues with that system. That is great considering that is has been in those cars for nearly 20 years.

Imagine my confusion when I see power steering fluid out the rear of the floor pan the first time I saw one of these.

The pipes corrode, burst & leak. Taking out your PAS at the same time in a 2 ton car.

Brilliant engineering.

I had an e60 .... the active sway bar makes a world of difference

BMW is and has always been the brand of no compromises for driving experience. The fact that they can't make an engine that keeps the oil on the inside is testament to that. I love working on them (my family eats well) and they're great to drive when they're tight. You wouldn't catch me dead owning one.

Most of the ones that have came in to our salvage yard were leaking. They are hot sellers when we get a working unit. 👍🏽

I love the way the system makes the E90/E60s handle. It feels planted and almost as if it's on rails through corners if you have good tires

This is similar to the PDCC system on Porsche. Works wonderful on Cayenne’s. Pretty reliable if serviced correctly.
