Buying a German artillery is a lot like buying a German automobile: You definitely want it, but you're not sure if you'll always have a 130 IQ mechanic named Hans available to repair it.

In the U.S. if the loader breaks we just get a another 18 year old.

Hellbird4 I really appreciate the Hazmat warning label on the shell. So the enemy knows what's coming.

You know that you are in germany when there is a „warning, explosive“ sign on an artillery shell

for everyone who is wondering why this is so complicated: the german army wanted to have an automatic loading system for their new artillery piece since the PzH70 project failed to meet the expectations.

the army said, they wanted to have a 3 second autoloader and Mr. Frank Abel from FAC was tasked to create that loading mechanism. Hydraulics are too slow to have 3 second sustained fire so he opted for pneumatics.
with pressurized air the cannon could be loaded so fast they could shoot 6 Rounds and all of them are hitting its designated target in the same time. the concept is called MRSI = Multiple Rounds, Simultaneous Impact.
the first shot would be shot with maximum charge, at almost maximum elevation, the next shot a little less elevation, the next shot a little less charge and less elevation and so on.

Artillery batteries of 3 PzH2000 could do MRSI and pepper a target, for example a bridge with 1 metric ton of explosive mass within one second with a deviation/radius of impact of 1.5m (~1 1/2 Yards)

its also made like this because the army wanted a system which would be able to get into firing position, fire and retreat to escape retaliation artillery fire / counter artillery within 30 seconds.

there is no other artillery system (not even the korean one) which is as capable as the PzH2000.
funny enough, maintenance is fairly easy compared to other armored vehicles with a very simple hydraulics system compared to other artillery pieces which rely completely on hydraulics and not on pneumatics (compressed air) for their loading mechanism.

its also pretty spacious inside :) feel free to ask questions in the comments!

My favorite thing was the ukranian arty guy that say he felt like he had to take his boots off and clean up when using the PHZ2000 because it was too fancy

Next version: you put in raw iron and explosive and it creates the round before loading it 😂

The shell goes mechanically from the factory to inside the artillery tube.

The idea behind this autoloader is that this artillery system is capable to shoot three rounds shortly after another in such a way that they all arrive at the same time at the target.
If one round weights 50kg but you need 150 kg get down a bridge this is how one can do it with the phz2000

The term "over-engineered" is a pet peeve of mine. In order for something to be over-engineered you first would have to prove that you can design a mechanism that does the same thing but is simpler.
That is where the whole thing usually breaks down.

In this specific case, just compare the loading mechanism of the PzH2000 with others like the K9 for example and you will see that it is way simpler and uses less steps than the competition.

Bro germans really built an entire industrial complex inside a tank💀

You can love them, you can hate them, but germans know how to make astonishing weapons.

"Private, that round ain't gonna load itself, oh nevermind, as you were"

One day in the US Army and there’d be something wrong with it and the sergeant would tell the private, “just put the fucking round in the tube, that shit ain’t ever gonna get fixed”

It may be over engineered but it works incredibly well

I'm reminded of that old Volkswagen commercial from the early 2000's that ended with the German guy saying "German engineering in ze house yaaaa."

It's not over engineered. It's German.
