If someone in 2002 told me that a company could sell off the idea of offline (and DRM-free) gaming as a novel concept in 2015 *and* be sort of right, I'd be laughing in their face.

We live in an absurd world.

CDPR make the Witcher and then make GOG.

What a lovely bunch of individuals.

Damnit, GOG...my wallet will never survive this...

Seriously, though. I've always loved these guys. Total heroes.

My vision on gaming exactly.

Yes, Steam sales are nice. Yes, it's nice to have a library of your games in one location.
But if a service like Steam or Origin for whatever reason shuts down, or closes your account, it's bye bye games. Sure, chances are high this won't happen, but the possibility is there, and that's what makes it not true ownership.

True ownership is that you own it, and no one can take it away from you. You can do with it what you want. You bought it, so it's yours. You're not renting it for as long as the online service you're using is online.

Does DRM free mean I can back up a copy of the game to a DVD?

I don't usually do this but I feel we should all "like" this video.

There was a time when even top tier PC games only required a simple product key activation, which would ONLY be authenticated when you try to connect online for multiplayer. No third party middleware required, and no online authentication for single player content. That way no matter if the devs go out of business or the servers get shutdown for some unknown reason, I will still always be guaranteed to at least play the single player version of the game. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who still remembers that time. I'm glad that CDPR is trying to bring that time back.

I went back to watch this video again because it's, uh...really relevant right now.

I'll be honest, I'm probably not going to use it unless games start to be specifically released on it. But I will admit that this might just be the slap to the face that Valve needs to get its' shit together.

And GOG gives me yet another reason to love them.

This is why i prefer gog over steam, especially in the last couple of years, i have all my games downloaded on an external HDD, i can install my games whenever i go with official installers, as well as all the extra content without requiring an internet access.

This will be the biggest Steam competitor yet, I guarantee it.

It's amazing how this company keeps coming up with more reasons to love them.

Just a few weeks ago, I was considering making GOG my go to digital game store. This was around the time my ISP went down and I couldn't access any of my games since I have not set my Steam client to OFFLINE.

And then Valve and Bethesda pulls this paid mod nonsense, well, time to pack up and move.

Great news guys, and something other platforms should look to learn from. You'll definitely have my support, and hopefully that of enough people to turn heads in the gaming industry, so they can see what we as gamers really want.

Wet dreams.

Just revisited this video after months now that they started the Reclaim Your Games initiative.

I like Steam for various reasons, but I still have many gripes with it and it needs all the competition we can throw at it.

DRM is not the only, but granted the biggest issue, especially with consoles also getting download-only titles more and more the DRM plague is alive and well. Anyone supporting the DRM-free pro-customer side has my sympathy and support.

Keep it up, GOG.
