I'm excited for the backwards compatibility as someone who currently owns a 1700

I've been rocking an Intel i7 4770K for about 5 years now and have been annoyed with Intel's very incremental refreshes of the Skylake architecture. This third iteration of the Ryzen processors, I feel, is finally going to be a worthy platform upgrade with its 8+ core count and projected core speeds. I am not a fanboy. I adopt whichever brand outperforms the other and offers the best overall value for the money. AMD has clearly put a lot of eggs in this basket, and I'm excited to see how things play out. I am also waiting for the NAVI GPUs to drop as well. With all of the reported technical issues surrounding the RTX cards, I'm not confident in Nvidia's support of their 2000 series cards. If AMD can produce comparable RTX2080+ performance at a comparable if not better price, I might just end up with a full AMD build for the first time in my life this year.

*AMD* is Our only Hope, for cheapest graphic cards. While *NVIDIA* is staggering at price point..

I picked up a gen1 ryzen 5 a year ago for dirt cheap.
It's amazing.
These gen2 and 3 chips have me looking to upgrade for no reason.

I think we all picked up that CES flu. Hope you get well soon.

I always wonder why in the hell none of these comparisons ever mention the PRICE DIFFERENCES between the Intel and AMD CPUs being compared. The i9-9900k goes for $530 while the most expensive leaked price for an 8 core/16 thread Gen 3 Ryzen, the Ryzen 5 3600X is less that HALF of that at $239.

Pretty excited for AMD. Depending on the price, I am hoping to jump on the AM4 chipset leaving behind my first ever built PC, my 4690k.

I'm on a 7700k and totally plan on upgrading to the 3700x when it drops this Summer.
However, I think as a reviewer you have a skewed idea of how people upgrade. The normal person does not upgrade incrementally when each new series comes out like a reviewer does. The average person usually only upgrades every 2 or even 3 generations. By that point it would be kind of silly to drop that brand new CPU into your old motherboard even if it were technically compatible.
Put it this way, not many people upgraded from their 1700 Ryzen they bought at launch to the 2700 because the gains were just not enough to justify the cost of the CPU even without needing to buy a new motherboard. Now take those same people who got the 17000 when the 3700 comes out. Now the cost of the CPU may be worth it (hopefully, haven't seen them in action yet.) But who is going to drop a brand new 12 or 16 core 3700 into their B350 or x370 board? Almost no one. They are going to get a new motherboard with the latest chip set to take full advantage of their sparkly new chip.
Obviously there will be exceptions. There will be people who hold on to their motherboard as long as possible while spending to get a new CPU because that is all they can do and still want maximum performance on a tight budget. However, I do not see that as the norm.

Win for AMD! Lesser E-waste for the world!

An overclocking monster would be exactly what AMD needs right now. I think the lower power consumption of 7nm will give this new series a lot of headroom.

I think if the rumors are true, that the 8 core AMD CPU (ryzen 5 is the 8 core model ) kept up with the I9 9900K was a 8 core CPU that should make every one that's not Intel dance in the streets! The 8 core AMD is a 3500X or I5 equivalent model. Meaning what? The AMD 3700X should smash the I9 9900K and the 3900X will crush Intel's hopes and dreams. This is going to be big! Even this team blue fan is seeing Red! Good for AMD. Ryzen 5 (8 core) beating Intel's I9! Wow BTW Ebert feel better! Loved your CES coverage as well!

What you said at 6:00 is actually a big deal. If Intel would have been less greedy, i'd have a 9700k in my Z270i motherboard today because i need the upgrade. But if i'm to buy a new motherboard and cpu, at this point i'll wait for Ryzen 3rd gen (a bit longer than expected tho, but still... my choice was made).

I do have a rig with a Ryzen 5 1600 CPU & X-370 Motherboard. Am very pleased with it. The only drawback was the high RAM price for the 3200 Mhz sticks, but that was not AMD's fault. Beeing able to exchange the CPU to a 3rd gen unit is greatly appreciated, don't know if I will but love to have the possibility!!!

From what we know it seems like Zen 2 has a ~15% IPC lead in multi-threading over Coffee Lake, and if SMT scaling maintains like Zen/+ then that means it has a 6 - 7% single-threaded IPC lead. We got an Ice Lake leak the other day, and that shows a 6 - 7% IPC gain over Coffee Lake too, which means AMD's at least at parity in single-threaded IPC.
Things like latency, frequency, and power are still a mystery though, for both parties. Although we can make some educated guesses.
The big thing is that we're getting Zen 2 in the mainstream market for certain, but who knows when or if we'll get Ice Lake there, or anything 10nm even.

I will upgrade from my 2014 bought 4930k to a 8 Core ryzen 3000 series CPU this year. If I'm excited enough, I will buy it at release, otherwise at black Friday. Unfortunately the GPU development has reached a point where I'm not willing to spend any money and my 1080ti will stay with me for a little longer.

No need to tell me, I’ve been excited for months. I’m waiting for Zen2 to upgrade my 2011 CPU.
