What about circumstances where deceipt and/or disobedience are the demonstration of integrity? I.e. civil disobedience, protest etc. I suppose the "following rules" is more to do with "rules" that we set for ourselves based on our personal values?

I think this really muddies the water on what it means to have integrity. I dont think thats because its ill defined but that it is just inherently a very subjective thing.

As a personal anecdote which i think highlights this; I would never consider a landlord to be a person of integrity because i believe landlording is a practice which is prone to a parasitic exploitation of the poor. Yet my society deems landlords perfectly valid and acceptable. Landlording is well within the "rules". Yet I will never choose to be a landlord myself because I feel that I am "cheating" despite it being perfectly within the rules of my country and almost certainly the most financially effective thing to do but it betrays my own personal values. It breaks my own personal rules that I hold for myself.

And just the same, a landlord may hold the profit motive as a personal value that they follow. To follow and obey the cold calculus of the market. In being a profit seeking landlord they too may see themselves as a person of integrity.
