Just wanted to say thank you. This was such an informative 'listening' practice. Your clear pronunciation and use of common vocabulary is also very much appreciated 🙂 PS I am originally from Germany now living in Australia so I can totally relate to not showing too much emotions 😄 Also my Chinese friend here in Australia just came out of her one month after birth stint. It was a new concept for me at first but my friend was guided by the tradition which made her feel safe. Nothing wrong about that.

My girlfriend is Chinese, we met in Abu Dhabi. There are certainly differences in our cultures. Even know I know she loves me, she does ot say it often, where as Americans say it a lot. That has taken me time to get used to. I went to China last year to meet her family, and they gave us there blessings. I was giving red envelopes to her family and friends as the tradition is. Her family, friends and even strangers were extremely nice and hospitable to me. I have even learned to like hot water now! I love China and the Chinese people and look forward to gong back. One of th funniest things was how everyone was amazed that I could used chopsticks so well!

As a western who lived in Taiwan, I love not having to open presents in front of people. I'm not one to get very excited openly, even if I love the gift. So, I feel like I'm on display and have to have a reaction when opening gifts in front of people. I feel the same when giving a gift. I had a Chinese colleague here in Canada who was very kind to me and when she transferred to another unit, I bought her a book of Chinese idioms with the Chinese, pinyin, and English translations. She was our charge nurse and loved idioms and always looking at me to translate, but my Chinese is very limited. Best present exchange ever. Quick, respectful and quiet. I love that we're having these types of interactions where a nurse originally from China is in charge of a hospital unit and explaining idioms to Canadians from many countries around the world. That's a real gift! Your channel is amazing!

Certainly this is not a top 6 - or even a top 10 - cultural difference, but worth mentioning: As a westerner in China, especially in the smaller cities and remote areas, a lot of Chinese (especially a group of two or more) will approach and ask if they can take a picture with you. Here in the US, especially here in the Los Angeles area, people usually won’t do that with strangers, even to celebrities. A teacher I had in Qingdao thought it was rude when people did that to us, but I always had fun with it and none of the picture takers were ever rude. BTW DengDeng and Crystal - Great teaching points in this video, as always. Thank you!

Nice video! I really enjoyed to watch you talking about the differences in culture. Some comments regarding the topics:

2--> I experienced in China that even during the hot summer we would always get hot water. Which was unfortunate, since I was thirsty but the water was too hot to drink! However there was one restaurant serving cold water, which quickly became one of my favorite restaurants to go to.

3 --> This depends a lot on the country. E.g. in Germany you mostly have to pay by cash, but in the Netherlands you mostly pay cashless, using your debit card, which most people have with them since they need to carry their id card with them anyway. You can also use your phone to function like your debit card, but since I have my debit card with me anyway I haven't tried using my phone for it yet.

Your voices are so clear, your vocabulary and grammar so well chosen, I only had to look at the English a few times during the video.
