Miter Saw Dust Collector - The Dust Chuter

After I built my miter saw/planer stand, I needed a dust collection solution. It had to be compact and not be a large box hanging off the back so I could still rotate the top of the stand.

I should note that after I made this video I did play around with the installation a little bit more. I found that if I stretch the bottom towards the bottom of the fence so that none of the black material is showing, the dust did not collect in the back of the unit, and did a much better job.

Its about time these companies worked on dust collection for their mitre saws

Thank you for doing this and posting your results, but you don't make an equal comparison.  You compare the saw+no shroud+dust bag with the saw+shroud+vacuum.  You've changed two things at the same time.  Makes it impossible to say if it was the shroud that did the trick, or the vacuum.

I have the same saw and they are great machines but yes, the lack of dust collection can be a problem

Wish I could get comfortable with this idea. You have done an admirable job of presenting it. This video is quality work as I'm sure your woodworking is as well. So I only have compliments for how you have presented this item here, but my concern is with the item itself. I'll just leave it at that because I can only applaud the designers of this for coming up with an interesting prototype. We have the same concerns with where the saw has to be in the shop and how poorly almost any strategy works for dust collection. The guys who can build in a box behind are the lucky ones. For the rest of us I fear that no matter how clever the design, we're going to be doing a lot of vacuuming afterward no matter what we do during the cutting. I have a mask hanging on the saw and the best shop vac arrangement I can manage and I just get on with it. The 12" Hitachi compound sliding saw in our shop works almost as much as the big table saw, so we just do our best. Anyway, great video. I bet you do some pretty nice work, given your attention to detail. Thanks for your post.

I suppose that if one's miter station is open ended, this makes sense, but if you have a shroud around the saw, it doesn't really matter if you're vacuuming a little or a lot of dust. It takes the same to clean it up. The real issue that needs to be addressed is the fine airborn dust that a miter saw throws into the atmosphere. This might be an experiment for Huy, as he seems to understand the experimental process.

I have the same saw. I did a similar solution with a flexible piece of plastic. Had similar results. Plastic salvaged from vertical blinds.

Love the table design that your saw is on!

I actually had one and spent many hours trialing it for my Makita LS1216. Unsuccessfully. Here now looking for an update if available. Hopefully I can save you time by telling you, in my opinion, the version I had wasn't viable for my use.

As a fellow garage woodworker I suggest you try edge routing with the festool hand held router and vac attached Wow. 98 percent dust free.It was shocking when I first used it. For dados their is no real improvement but for flush trimming and edge routing you could be wearing a Tux and look good afterwards. 95 percent of my clean up comes from my planing, table saw(bosch portable) and miter saw.

Hi! Pretty sweet video quality...just a thought, in the future, try a lavalier mike so your commentary, stays at the same level/quality as your video quality. Looking forward to more of your presentations. Best of luck!

This was a great video Guy. Must have taken quite awhile, vacuuming, collecting, etc. But worthwhile, and really demonstrates the effectiveness. Disregard the haters out there.

I really dislike dust, and the chopsaw is the remaining offender in my shop. I have a Big Gulp hood rigged to the back of mine and connected to my central DC. Helps a lot, but something like this would complete the picture.

Interesting that you still can't buy this two years after your video. I think I can probably make something comparable out of stretchy fabric that can be bought. Time to start sketching out some ideas. Thanks again for putting in the time on this one.

One of the problems with most miter saws that have a bag is that the bag is closed and does not allow a free flow of dust into it. So I leave the closer off the bag and hang a safeway plastic grocery bag from it. Most of the dust does then go through the bag and drops into the safeway bag.

This is the best job site saw ever made an if dust collection is your #1 priority maybe spend $1600 on a festool for your shop but for me being able to duplicate precision cuts, great power, an versatility is more important than how much dust it picks up! It's a miter saw not a dyson

Good video demo, but quick note -- the website for the product is no longer valid.

I don't think its a real good head to head review. No offense. I would like to see how it stacks up using it with a vacuum with and without the keen catch. The Vacuum is sucking in dust while the bag will just collects forced dust. If you use a vacuum, how much does the keen product actually help?

My garage door wheel saw past the threshold and cut outside. Works every time :)

The problem with this test is that you changed from the dust bag to the vacuum collector AND changed from nothing behind the blade to this device you are promoting. What would have been far more useful to me would have been using the vacuum collector for both tests and comparing the efficacy of the device. As you know, the vacuum collector will tend to also pull in dust that wouldn't normally go into the bag.

Thought the same idea but with another Will it allow you to move the saw in multi directions and do the same

I clicked on the link for the Keen-Products and it is a DEAD END, apparently they no longer exist.

In critiquing the video, anybody who is looking for videos on miter saw dust collection already knows how much of a mess they make. I would address it VERY briefly in the intro and go straight into the solution. That would cut your video time in half, but keep the information we need.
