Storyline:

Reviews:
"This film tells the story of Lt Frederic Henry, an American who has enlisted as an ambulance driver in the Italian Army during the First World War. One day he and his friend Major Rinaldi date a pair of English Nurses; Fredric and Nurse Catherine Barkley get on well and quickly fall in love. He is soon returned to the action but following an injury he is hospitalised in the Milan hospital where Catherine works. Here their love deepens. When he returns to the front again they write to each other but Rinaldi ensures their letters don't get through leading to Fredric making some drastic and dangerous choices.

While this film is set in the war, and features some impressive battle scenes it is at its heart a love story. This plays out well and there is a good chemistry between Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes as Fredric and Catherine. Adolphe Menjou is solid as Rinaldi; a slightly ambiguous character who serves to bring the two protagonists together and later keep them apart. While the battle scenes may not be brutal and large scale as those in more modern films they are intense thanks to the way it focuses on Fredric and those around him. The camera work is very inventive; a highlight being the way we see Catherine from Frederic's point of view as she enters his hospital room and kisses him. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to fans of classic cinema." - Written by "Tweekums" on IMDb."com

Having been brought up hardcore on the south side of Chicago even I cried during this super sad movie. This movie was too close to home. Helen Hayes played a small nurse. My wife's a very short woman and also a nurse. Gary Cooper played a military man. Like old Coop, I'm over 6 feet and a rebel. Both the nurse and my wife have the same first names and I have the soldier's first name. This movie is too close to home in too many ways.

I don't even know how to comment on this movie. Talk about drama ! It was good to finally see this classic after hearing about it for so long though.

Старая классика бесценна, как Моцарт, как Шопен, сколько не смотри и не слушай всегда прекрасна и современна.
Последняя сцена вся омыта слезами. Спасибо за память!

A wonderfully, from the heart, simple romance from a bygone era .

Gore Vidal once remarked that Hemingway was a second-rate writer but that his books made excellent Hollywood movies. I think he had a point.

A celebrated film from the 1930s that does not need colourisation; especially such a messy, distracting colourising as this.

Mr. Hemingway was a loner in his fictional land personal life. Only such a man could write a story of love between strangers! They vowed to each other not to part in life or death

Helen Hayes appears to be dwarf next to Cooper !!

Too Old (1932) even for a 72 yr old. I prefer For Whom the Bell Tolls (1945) if I want to see a Hemingway film.

Even if the colorization had been done right, which it wasn't, it still would have been a mistake.

Nice clean print. Sorry but not a fan of colorization. Thanks for putting it here.

Thought it would be a great war story but it turned out to be a silly live story. Gore vidal certainly had a point. However the young Gary Cooper was cute.

unwatchable movie....hemingway must have had a heart attack when he saw this movie...everything and everybody in it are so stilted and artificial and fake....nothing whatsoever like the book...all mood and atmosphere is lost in the movie and Gary Cooper is so wooden and so unpassionately menjou pretending to be an whole thing is ghastly....on the other hand it was made in 1932 which was the third year of talking pictures so nobody had any clue about what they were doing....but this movie is a cartoon, a high camp parody of an emotional gripping hemingway novel

none of hemingways novels were turned into good movies, they were all stinkers...hemingway himself couldn't bear any of them...hemingway had a closeness and an intimacy with his readers that is completely lost on film, where the characters come across on screen as either flat or shrill but completely unreal while muttering peculiar sometimes unsettling dialog and usually drinking too much.
