a farewell to arms... legs, fingers, toes, hearing, eyesight, and for a bunch of people: their whole bodies

Trivia note: One of Hemingway's short stories was banned in Canada, because it vilified a pilot who launched a Christmas day air raid.  Will Barker, the top Canadian Sopwith Camel pilot, did execute a Christmas day raid, which did launch German/Austrian reprisals.  Evidently Barker's wife was behind getting the story banned.

Hello I m avid reader of Ernesto we call him that way in Cuba and Florida USA. I have visited all the historic places where he works and live. My favorite the house in Cuba, La Bodegita Del Medio. In Isla Morada Florida USA they have a replica of his fishing Boat. My favorite reading The Old Man And The Sea. Thanks for the memories saludos

IMO Hemingway's short stories are better crafted than his novels.

I concur. Ive read many of hemingways writings, he was a brave man and idealist and suffered from post tramatic stress(battle fatuige) and a brken heart. You can see so much of himself in his stories.🐯

Thank you for this episode, Hemingway has been one of my favorites for decades, ever since an Aunt gave me, "For Whom the Bell Tolls"

I just finished reading A Farewell to Arms. The story is a poetic tragedy that will tear your heart out. As was the case of WW1. An incredible book that gripped me at the end and let me have it. Go read the book if you haven’t. It’s not as straightforward a war novel as All Quiet on the Western Front, but really a story about how the war had sucked the very soul out of those swept up in it.

You have to wonder how many Hemingway types we lost in this war that are forever silent.

There's a story that the Italian mathmetician Vilfredo Pareto was discussing statistics with one of Italy's generals. Pareto asked, "What makes a great general?" and the answer was, "One who wins three major battles in succession."

"And how many generals are great generals?" Answer: "About one in eight."

Pareto: "If the chance of winning is half, the chance of winning three in a row is the reciprocal of two cubed, or one in eight. Statistics, my dear general, not generalship."
