Actually if your DM is trying to kill you because you are pissing them off the dead give away is “You come across a herd of elk, so what do you do?” “I kill one of them for rations.” “You fire your arrow and kill one of the Cows, and now the herd of bulls that were in mating season fights are heading right at you.” “Got it, new character sheet please.”

I've been a dedicated DM for the past 16 years. Never got the players who just want to murderhobo and I've never understood DMs who want to kill the players. It's a cooperative story telling. Not a competition.

The easier way to tell when the DM stopped giving you normal consequences and started trying to kill you is when they stop asking "are you sure you want to do this?"

"Yeah, his spellsave DC is 28"

"Oh no, I totally didn't know you charisma save was a -2 and now you're posessed"

"He casts Power word kill... Oh, you have 101HP left? He casts quickened spell disintegrate, THEN casts power word kill"

It's also usually a sign of a bad/new DM if you ONLY hear the second one. That being said it could also be a sign of a bad player that the DM is trying to punish and is failing

My DM is like this every time we play with a magic user because he always has to look for a way to counter us. I'm playing a magic user so he changed a little bit of the lore in his world just to add a slightly homebrewed enemy who just swallows magic attacks and actively seeks them out to feast on their magical powers.
